The very next evening, a shadow falls over King's Abbot once more. Breaking down the locked study door, Dr. Sheppard and Parker discover Roger Ackroyd slumped in his chair, dead, a dagger plunged into his neck. The crucial letter from Mrs. Ferrars is gone. The immediate suspicion falls upon Captain Ralph Paton, Ackroyd's stepson, a charming but financially troubled young man who has vanished from the village, leaving behind only footprints that match his shoes leading from the study window.
Into this web of suspicion and small-town secrets steps the renowned Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, recently retired to King's Abbot to cultivate vegetable marrows. With his meticulously ordered mind and insistence on psychological truths, Poirot begins his investigation, interviewing every member of the household and guests present at Fernly Park. This includes Ackroyd's financially dependent sister-in-law, Mrs. Cecil Ackroyd, and her beautiful daughter Flora, who was secretly engaged to Ralph Paton and initially claimed to have seen her uncle alive after dinner. There is also the enigmatic housekeeper, Miss Russell, the efficient secretary, Geoffrey Raymond, and the bluff Major Hector Blunt.
Poirot meticulously pieces together timelines, motives, and alibis, uncovering a myriad of hidden relationships and deceptions. He discovers that Flora Ackroyd had lied about her last encounter with her uncle, and that Ralph Paton was secretly married to Ursula Bourne, the parlormaid, a fact that had incensed Roger Ackroyd. It emerges that Dr. Sheppard was Mrs. Ferrars's blackmailer, and he murdered Roger Ackroyd to prevent him from reading the letter that would expose his heinous secret.
The doctor's chilling method is unveiled: after leaving Ackroyd's study, he returned, stabbed him, and then set a dictaphone recording of Ackroyd's voice to play, creating the illusion that Ackroyd was still alive when others heard him. He then slipped out the window, donned Ralph Paton's shoes to create misleading footprints, and later retrieved the dictaphone and the missing letter. Confronted with the undeniable truth, Dr. Sheppard, in a final, chilling act of control, records his confession within the very manuscript that has guided the reader through the mystery, before choosing to end his own life, sparing his sister Caroline the public shame of his exposure.
