Le règne du langage

Many readers found Tom Wolfe's prose style to be a major highlight, describing it as riveting, entertaining, and filled with magnificent, irreverent lines. His flamboyant and distinctive approach, characterized by wit and sarcasm, made the book a fun, clear, and thoroughly enjoyable read. Reviewers appreciated Wolfe's willingness to challenge established scientific authority and question deeply entrenched orthodoxies, especially within the fields of evolutionary theory and linguistics. The book is lauded for popularizing complex academic debates and exposing a larger audience to discussions around the origins of human language. Wolfe's ability to dissect intellectual figures and highlight the human, sometimes tribal, elements influencing scientific thought was seen as a valuable and thought-provoking contribution, encouraging readers to never be afraid to question what they think they know.

However, the book drew significant criticism for its content and academic rigor. Many reviewers felt Wolfe's arguments were oversimplified to the point of becoming caricatures, lacking genuine engagement with the underlying scientific and academic material. Critics accused the book of being "unsullied by research" and filled with incorrect assertions, demonstrating a superficial understanding of both evolutionary biology and linguistics. Specific issues raised include a perceived cavalier approach to historical facts, the wholesale lifting of anecdotes from other works, and the misleading impression that complex debates have been definitively settled. Wolfe's style, while entertaining to some, was also described as a "diatribe" or "rant," characterized by excessive ellipses, personal attacks, and a polemic tone that undermined his credibility for many. The book's structure was also criticized, with some finding the initial focus on unrelated historical figures irrelevant and the latter sections rushed.

Ultimately, "The Kingdom of Speech" is a highly polarizing book. While it offers the familiar pleasure of Tom Wolfe's unique analytical style and serves as an entertaining challenge to academic "sacred cows," its scientific inaccuracies and perceived lack of depth proved distracting for many. The book will likely appeal most to readers who enjoy Wolfe's distinctive flamboyant prose and his contrarian approach to intellectual history. It is particularly recommended for those who are skeptical of long-held academic orthodoxies, enjoy a "David versus Goliath" narrative, and are interested in the broader philosophical questions surrounding the origin of language, even if they prefer a provocative, journalistic take over a strictly academic one. Those seeking a rigorously researched scientific treatise or who are deeply invested in the established theories of Darwin and Chomsky may find it frustrating.
