Meanwhile, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, the remaining members of the Fellowship's original quest, pursue the Uruk-hai who captured Merry and Pippin after Boromir's fall. Their relentless chase across the plains of Rohan leads them to the grim news that the Orcs were cut down by the Riders of Rohan, leaving the fate of the two hobbits uncertain. Hope seems to wane until they stumble upon signs of escape and venture into the ancient, whispering depths of Fangorn Forest. There, amidst the gnarled roots and ancient boughs, they are reunited with a figure both familiar and awe-inspiring: Gandalf, returned from the abyss, now Gandalf the White, imbued with a new, potent light.
Gandalf leads the trio to Edoras, the golden hall of Rohan's King Théoden, a monarch under the dark spell of his treacherous advisor, Gríma Wormtongue, who secretly serves the corrupted wizard Saruman. With Gandalf's intervention, Théoden is freed from Wormtongue's insidious influence, his spirit rekindled, and his resolve to defend his people against Saruman's encroaching armies hardened. Rohan, a land of horse-lords, now faces the full might of Isengard, its villages burned and its people massacred by Orcs and Dunlendings. The forces of Rohan, led by Théoden and the newly arrived Gandalf, prepare for a desperate stand at the ancient fortress of Helm's Deep.
Far from the war-torn plains, Merry and Pippin, having escaped the Uruk-hai during a skirmish with the Rohirrim, find themselves deep within Fangorn Forest. There they encounter Treebeard, the oldest of the Ents, the ancient, tree-like shepherds of the forest. The hobbits, through their tales of Saruman's destruction of the forests for his war machine, rouse the slow, deliberate Ents to a terrible wrath. An Entmoot is called, and the decision is made: the Ents will march on Isengard, Saruman's stronghold, to enact nature's vengeance.
The Battle of Helm's Deep rages, a brutal siege where the outnumbered defenders of Rohan, bolstered by Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, fight desperately against Saruman's ten thousand Uruk-hai. The fortress walls are breached, the odds seem insurmountable, yet courage flickers in the hearts of Men. Just as all hope appears lost, Gandalf returns at dawn with Éomer and a host of Rohirrim, turning the tide of the battle and scattering Saruman's forces into the waiting, silent forest of Huorns. Simultaneously, the Ents, a slow, unstoppable tide of ancient fury, assault Isengard, tearing down its walls and flooding its caverns, trapping Saruman within his tower of Orthanc.
Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam, guided by the increasingly unstable Gollum, skirt the Black Gate, finding it impassable. Gollum leads them south into the perilous lands of Ithilien, where they witness a skirmish between the Rangers of Gondor and Haradrim warriors. They are captured by Faramir, Boromir's younger brother, who, unlike his fallen kin, resists the lure of the One Ring, recognizing its corrupting power. After a brief stay in Henneth Annûn, Faramir allows the hobbits to continue their quest, warning them of the dangers that lie ahead.
Gollum, however, feeling betrayed by Frodo's trust in Faramir, begins to plot anew, his darker, Sméagol-side gaining dominance. He leads Frodo and Sam to the dark, winding pass of Cirith Ungol, a treacherous path guarded by the ancient, monstrous spider, Shelob. Frodo, momentarily overcome, is stung and paralyzed by the creature. Sam, believing his master dead, heroically battles Shelob, wounding her gravely, and takes up the Ring, along with Frodo's sword Sting and the Phial of Galadriel. As Orcs arrive and carry away Frodo's seemingly lifeless body, Sam, now burdened with the Ring, faces a grim choice, his loyalty and courage tested to their absolute limits at the very threshold of Mordor.
