Upon a desolate Scottish heath, amidst thunder and lightning, two valiant generals, Macbeth and Banquo, returning from a victorious battle, encounter three withered hags. These "Weïrd Sisters" greet Macbeth with a chilling prophecy: he shall be Thane of Cawdor, and then, King hereafter. To Banquo, they foretell that he will be father to a line of kings, though never king himself. Scarcely have their strange words faded when messengers arrive, announcing that King Duncan, in his gratitude, has indeed bestowed upon Macbeth the title of Thane of Cawdor, confirming the first part of the prophecy and igniting a spark of perilous ambition within him.

Macbeth, still reeling from the witches' pronouncements, writes to his wife, Lady Macbeth, sharing the extraordinary news. Her ambition, far more ruthless and immediate than his, instantly seizes upon the vision of the crown. She calls upon dark spirits to unsex her, to fill her with direst cruelty, so that no natural compunction might deter her husband from the deed. When King Duncan, a kind and trusting monarch, decides to honor Macbeth by staying at their castle in Inverness, Lady Macbeth sees their opportunity. She relentlessly pressures her husband, questioning his manhood and resolve, until his moral hesitations crumble beneath her fierce will.

That same night, a nervous Macbeth, his mind plagued by a spectral dagger guiding him, steals into the King's chamber and brutally murders Duncan as he sleeps. The act is a profound violation, plunging him into immediate guilt and a paranoia that will haunt his every waking moment. Lady Macbeth, though initially more steadfast, plants the bloody daggers on the drugged guards, framing them for the regicide. The discovery of the King's body throws the kingdom into chaos. Duncan's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, fearing for their own lives, flee, making them appear guilty and paving the way for Macbeth to be crowned King of Scotland.

The throne, however, brings no peace. Macbeth, consumed by insecurity, remembers the witches' prophecy for Banquo – that his lineage would inherit the crown. To secure his own power, he arranges for Banquo and his young son, Fleance, to be ambushed and murdered. Though Banquo falls, Fleance miraculously escapes into the night, leaving Macbeth's fear of a rival dynasty undiminished. At a royal banquet, Macbeth's torment manifests in a horrifying vision: the blood-soaked ghost of Banquo appears, visible only to him, driving him to a frenzied, public madness that barely Lady Macbeth can contain.

Desperate for reassurance, Macbeth seeks out the Weïrd Sisters again. They offer him new, yet dangerously ambiguous, prophecies: he should beware Macduff, no man "of woman born" can harm him, and he will remain safe until Birnam Wood itself marches against Dunsinane Hill. Feeling invincible, Macbeth embarks on a reign of terror, slaughtering innocents, including Macduff's entire family, in a brutal attempt to eliminate all threats.

Meanwhile, Lady Macbeth, unable to bear the weight of her crimes, descends into madness. She walks in her sleep, endlessly trying to wash imaginary bloodstains from her hands, muttering fragments of her past wickedness. Her mind shattered, she eventually takes her own life. News of her death barely registers with Macbeth, who has grown numb to feeling. He clings to the witches' prophecies, even as Malcolm, Duncan's son, raises an army in England and marches toward Scotland with Macduff.

As the English forces approach, Macbeth receives word that Birnam Wood appears to be moving towards Dunsinane – the soldiers are camouflaging themselves with branches from the forest. The prophecy's deceptive nature begins to unravel. In the climactic confrontation, Macbeth faces Macduff, who reveals he was "from his mother's womb untimely ripped" – born by Caesarean section, thus not "of woman born" in the traditional sense. Macbeth realizes the witches' trickery, but fights on with a desperate ferocity. Macduff, driven by grief and a thirst for justice, slays Macbeth, bringing his tyrannical reign to a bloody end. Malcolm is then proclaimed the rightful King of Scotland, restoring order to the shattered kingdom.
