In the desolate aftermath of the Flame Deluge, a cataclysm that scoured the Earth with fire and left behind a scorched, radioactive wasteland, humanity plunged into a new Dark Age. The survivors, fearing the very knowledge that had wrought their destruction, rose up in a violent Simplification, burning books and executing the educated. Amidst this barbarism, a solitary order of monks, the Albertian Order of Leibowitz, emerged in the desert of the southwestern United States, dedicating themselves to the sacred task of preserving the fragmented remnants of pre-deluge civilization – the "Memorabilia" – until the world might once again be ready for them.

Centuries later, in the 26th century, the world remains largely primitive. Brother Francis Gerard of Utah, a young novice in the Order, embarks on a Lenten vigil in the desert. There, a chance encounter with a wandering pilgrim leads him to an ancient fallout shelter containing precious relics: handwritten notes by the Blessed Isaac Leibowitz himself, a former weapons engineer who founded the Order and was martyred during the Simplification. This discovery, initially met with skepticism and even fear by his superiors who worry it might impede Leibowitz's canonization, becomes a cornerstone in the painstaking process of piecing together the lost wisdom of the ancients. Francis dedicates years to illuminating a copy of Leibowitz's blueprints, a labor of love that he hopes to present to the Pope in New Rome. Tragically, on his journey, he is waylaid by mutated outcasts and killed, the illuminated manuscript stolen, a poignant symbol of the fragility of knowledge in a brutal age.

As the 32nd century dawns, a new renaissance stirs. Humanity has begun to rebuild, and with it, a burgeoning interest in the scientific knowledge painstakingly guarded by the Leibowitzian Order. Thon Taddeo Pfardentrott, a brilliant secular scholar, akin to a modern-day Galileo, arrives at the abbey, drawn by rumors of their preserved "Memorabilia." He engages in profound intellectual sparring with the monks, his scientific skepticism clashing with their unwavering faith, yet both share a deep reverence for the pursuit of understanding. During his stay, the monks successfully demonstrate an arc lamp, a small but profound re-ignition of technological progress. Taddeo, however, grows frustrated, believing the Order hoards knowledge that could accelerate humanity's recovery. The world outside the abbey walls, led by figures like Mayor Hannegan of Texarkana, begins to assert its own burgeoning power, sometimes with ruthless ambition, threatening the delicate balance the Order has maintained.

The narrative then leaps forward to the 38th century, an era of advanced technology and space travel, yet one haunted by the specter of past mistakes. Humanity has once again developed nuclear weapons, and the world stands on the brink of another devastating global conflict between two superpowers, the Asian Coalition and the Atlantic Confederacy, mirroring the Cold War that preceded the first Flame Deluge. Dom Jethras Zerchi, the current Abbot of the Leibowitzian Order, now faces a profound moral dilemma. The Order, having expanded its mission to preserve all knowledge, not just Leibowitz's writings, recognizes the impending doom.

As the world descends into chaos, Zerchi confronts the chilling realities of a society that has embraced euthanasia as a pragmatic solution for the victims of radiation sickness, a practice abhorrent to his faith. He clashes fiercely with Dr. Cors, who advocates for a "merciful" end for the terminally exposed. The abbey itself becomes a sanctuary for refugees, a place of last resort against the encroaching devastation. Zerchi witnesses the tragic cycle of human history repeating itself: the rise of knowledge, the lust for power, and the inevitable self-destruction.

In a desperate, final act of preservation, Zerchi orchestrates a plan, a "Canticle for Leibowitz" in action. He dispatches a select group of monks, including Brother Joshua, into the void of space, carrying with them the precious archives of human knowledge and the sacred flame of faith. Their mission is to continue the Order's sacred duty, to carry the memory of humanity's triumphs and follies to new worlds, in the hope that perhaps, in another time and place, intelligent life might learn from Earth's tragic, cyclical history, and break free from the perpetual dance of enlightenment and annihilation. Back on Earth, the final, blinding flash of a renewed global conflict consumes the planet, leaving behind silence and the haunting question of whether true wisdom can ever truly overcome humanity's inherent flaws.
