Lincoln en el Bardo

This book is widely praised for its profoundly unique and inventive approach to storytelling, offering a reading experience unlike any other. Reviewers commend its imaginative concept, which blends historical accounts with a multi-voiced narrative to explore themes of grief, love, and the human condition. The author's meticulous research and seamless integration of factual and imagined historical excerpts are highlighted as a brilliant way to illuminate its subjects. Many found the book deeply emotional, poignant, and heartbreaking, appreciating its surreal imagery and the way it connects personal sorrow to universal suffering. The audiobook version is frequently lauded as magnificent, with its extensive cast of narrators enhancing the distinctive format.

However, the book's highly experimental structure is also the source of significant criticism. Some reviewers found it painfully boring, disjointed, and lacking a traditional plot or character development. They describe it as a series of semi-linked short paragraphs, feeling more like an author's notes or a list rather than a cohesive novel. The blend of real and made-up historical quotes, while praised by some, bothered others who sought clearer distinctions between fact and fiction. Critics also found the narrative confusing, repetitive, and at times too artsy or abstract, leading to frustration and a sense of being lost. For these readers, the unconventional style overshadowed the emotional depth, making it difficult to connect with the story or its many characters.

Overall, this is a highly original and ambitious work that has garnered both immense praise and strong dislike, winning prestigious awards while also being deemed unreadable by others. It is recommended for readers who are open to experimental, avant-garde literary fiction and appreciate a profound, multi-layered meditation on life, death, and human empathy, even if it comes without a conventional narrative arc. Those who prefer traditional storytelling with clear plots and character development, or who are easily frustrated by unconventional structures, may find this book challenging or unfulfilling.
