While largely positive, some reviews mention a few areas that could be less engaging for certain readers. A recurring point is that the pacing can feel slow at times, with some finding the narrative drags before fully captivating them. The story's structure, which includes shifts in location and time, was occasionally noted as potentially confusing for some readers, particularly younger ones. Additionally, a few reviewers suggest that while the book is recommended for ages nine and up, its sophisticated themes and vocabulary might make it more suitable for mature or discerning young readers, or best enjoyed as a read-aloud experience. One review also found the characters less developed and the climax predictable, though this was a less common sentiment.

Overall, the book receives widespread acclaim, with many reviewers wholeheartedly recommending it as a worthwhile and memorable read. It is celebrated as a powerful piece of historical fiction that offers both an engaging narrative and valuable insights into human nature during challenging times. This book is particularly recommended for readers who appreciate emotionally rich stories with strong character development and historical depth. It appeals to a broad audience, proving to be a rewarding experience for both children, especially those aged nine and above with an interest in historical fiction, and adults who enjoy a poignant and thought-provoking tale.
