Los Fusileros

The reviews consistently praise the book as an outstanding work of journalistic chronicle and non-fiction. Readers highlight the author's meticulous research, extensive documentation, and profound investigation, often describing it as a "gem" of investigative journalism. The writing style is frequently lauded as excellent, engaging, and captivating, making a complex historical account highly readable and even addictive. Many found the narrative to be dynamic, well-paced, and skillfully woven, blending factual information with human anecdotes and emotional depth. The book is commended for its ability to humanize and demystify the individuals at the heart of the story, presenting their contexts, motivations, and personal lives. Reviewers emphasize its importance as an essential document for understanding a crucial period in Chilean history, offering a comprehensive and objective look at a specific group's actions and the broader societal impact of the dictatorship. It is described as brutal, emotive, raw, and sensitive, managing to evoke strong emotions while maintaining a fine, unostentatious prose.

Despite widespread acclaim, some readers found certain aspects of the book challenging. A recurring point of criticism relates to the density of information and the complexity of the political terminology and aliases used for the group's members. Several reviewers suggested that an accompanying glossary of characters and their political nicknames would greatly enhance clarity and ease of reading, as they found themselves occasionally confused or overwhelmed. A few readers also felt that the narrative occasionally dragged or included sections that did not contribute significantly to the main story, leading to moments where they considered pausing their reading. Additionally, some expressed a desire for more extensive coverage on specific related events or a deeper dive into the stories of certain individuals, particularly women within the group.

Overall, the book is overwhelmingly regarded as a magnificent and indispensable contribution to Chilean historical understanding and non-fiction literature. It stands out for its rigorous journalism, compelling storytelling, and its ability to shed light on a pivotal, often controversial, chapter of the country's past. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in Chilean history, particularly the dictatorship era and the complexities of armed resistance. It will appeal to those who appreciate in-depth, well-researched chronicles that humanize historical figures and challenge preconceived notions. Readers who are prepared for a dense but ultimately rewarding and emotionally impactful journey will find this a powerful and thought-provoking read, offering a crucial perspective on the forces that shaped modern Chile.
