Edie, a twenty-three-year-old artist adrift in New York City, navigates a precarious existence marked by a dead-end job and a series of impulsive choices. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she begins a relationship with Eric, an older, married man who lives in the suburbs. After losing her job, Edie finds herself invited into Eric's New Jersey home, joining his wife, Rebecca, and their adopted teenage daughter, Akila, in an unconventional domestic arrangement.

This sudden immersion into a suburban family dynamic forces Edie to confront complex questions of race, class, and female desire, all while attempting to nurture her dormant artistic ambitions. Through Edie's unfiltered perspective, the novel offers a sharp, often darkly humorous, exploration of vulnerability and the search for belonging in a world that offers few easy answers.
