Más que maquillaje

The book is widely celebrated for its breathtaking and stunning photography, particularly the transformative celebrity makeovers where individuals are made to resemble other famous figures. Reviewers consistently praise Kevyn Aucoin's unparalleled artistry, genius, and timeless techniques, highlighting his visionary approach that was notably ahead of its time. Many appreciated his open-mindedness and progressive views on social issues, including his commitment to diversity across ethnicities, genders, and ages, as well as his exploration of the philosophy, politics, and history of makeup. Readers found the book informative, learning a great deal about the "behind beauty" topics and appreciating Aucoin's focus on inner beauty. It serves as a significant source of inspiration, offering unique looks and a refreshing perspective for those looking to explore makeup beyond current trends. For many, it was an entertaining read, offering personal insights into Aucoin's life and his interactions with celebrities.

Despite its artistic merits, a common criticism is that the book falls short as a practical, step-by-step makeup tutorial guide. Reviewers frequently note that application instructions are insufficient, glossed over, or lack the necessary detail and explanation of why certain techniques work. The absence of specific product recommendations and the repetitive nature of basic preparatory steps were also points of contention. Some readers, upon re-reading years later, found certain looks less avant-garde or inspirational than initially perceived. The book has been criticized for excessive name-dropping and, more significantly, for instances of benevolent racism, cultural appropriation, and benevolent misogyny, reflecting some outdated perspectives. Additionally, the perceived disingenuous claims about minimal product use in editorial looks frustrated those seeking to learn actual techniques, as visual evidence often suggested otherwise. Its USA-centric focus also made some celebrity references less relatable for international readers.

Ultimately, "Face Forward" is best regarded as a beautiful coffee-table book, an art piece, and a collector's item that showcases Kevyn Aucoin's extraordinary talent and philosophical approach to beauty. It is highly recommended for fans of Aucoin, aspiring makeup artists seeking inspiration, and individuals interested in the history and broader cultural impact of makeup. Beginners may find it valuable for understanding the transformative power and potential of makeup, as well as for gaining a different perspective on beauty. However, those looking for comprehensive, detailed, and practical step-by-step guides for recreating specific looks or learning advanced application techniques may find it lacking. The book appeals most to readers who appreciate the artistic, philosophical, and social dimensions of makeup rather than a purely instructional manual.
