Médecines douces

Reviewers largely commend the book for its rigorous, scientific, and evidence-based examination of alternative medicine. Many praise its comprehensive and honest approach, which delves into major modalities like acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, and herbal medicine. The book is frequently described as highly accessible, even for readers without a scientific background, as it effectively explains complex concepts such as clinical trials and the placebo effect, often enriched with engaging historical context. Authors are noted for their qualifications and a willingness to acknowledge instances where scientific evidence suggests potential effectiveness for certain therapies, while also providing a valuable appendix summarizing findings for numerous other treatments. The writing style is often highlighted as informative, entertaining, and essential for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the topic.

However, a notable segment of reviewers found the book to be overly biased against alternative medicine, with some perceiving a condescending or "holier-than-thou" tone. Critics point to what they consider a selective use of evidence, including anecdotal negative examples for alternative therapies, while allegedly downplaying the risks and side effects associated with conventional medicine. Some felt the authors stereotyped both practitioners and users of alternative medicine. Common criticisms include repetitiveness, excessive length, and a perceived lack of detailed citations for the studies mentioned. Specific concerns also arose regarding the authors' historical accounts of certain practices, their dismissal of methodologies beyond double-blind studies, and what some considered a superficial treatment of ancient herbal traditions like Ayurveda.

In conclusion, the book is widely regarded as a significant and valuable resource for understanding the scientific evidence supporting or refuting various alternative medical treatments. While its tone and methodology may be polarizing for some, it is highly recommended for readers who appreciate a rational, evidence-based perspective on healthcare choices, including medical professionals and individuals seeking to make informed decisions about their health. Those already skeptical of alternative therapies are likely to find their views affirmed, while readers deeply invested in alternative medicine without scientific scrutiny might find its conclusions challenging, despite potentially appreciating the historical context and detailed information provided.
