Martes Con Mi Viejo Profesor Una Leccion de la Vida, de la Muerte y del Amor

My world, once filled with the eager pursuit of meaning and connection, had become a frantic blur of deadlines, success, and the empty promise of more. I was a sports journalist, chasing stories and paychecks, convinced that relentless work and material accumulation were the keys to a fulfilling life. Then, one ordinary Tuesday evening, a television screen flickered with a familiar face – Morrie Schwartz, my old sociology professor from Brandeis. He was on "Nightline," speaking with Ted Koppel, his eyes still twinkling, but his body ravaged by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS. A promise I had made to him sixteen years earlier, to stay in touch, echoed in my mind, a promise I had long since broken.

The next thing I knew, I was on a plane, heading to Morrie's home in West Newton, Massachusetts. The man I found was a shadow of his former vibrant, dancing self, yet his spirit was undimmed. He sat in his armchair, which he called "the coaching tree," ready to impart his final lessons. Our conversations began haltingly, a mix of awkwardness and old affection, but soon, they flowed, just as they had during my college days. We decided to meet every Tuesday, just like before, for what would become my last class.

Each Tuesday, I arrived with food, a small gesture that soon became unnecessary as Morrie lost the ability to eat solid meals. But the ritual of coming, of sitting, of listening, became everything. We talked about the world and its misguided values, about self-pity and regret, topics I, in my fast-paced existence, had barely paused to consider. Morrie, facing his own mortality head-on, showed me how to mourn in the mornings, allowing himself to feel the sadness, then choosing to focus on the good that remained. He was teaching me that death is not the opposite of life, but a part of it, and that learning how to die is learning how to live.

As weeks turned into months, Morrie's body continued its relentless decline. He lost the use of his legs, then his hands, and eventually, even the ability to care for his most basic needs. Yet, with each physical loss, his spiritual presence seemed to grow stronger, his mind sharper, his heart more open. We spoke of family, of marriage, of the importance of forgiveness, and of the profound need to give love and accept it. He urged me to build my own culture, one not dictated by societal pressures, but by genuine human connection and compassion.

He spoke about emotions, about how many people walk around "sleepwalking" through life, afraid to truly feel. Morrie, even as he was losing control of his body, was fully present in every moment, embracing his dependency not as a weakness, but as an opportunity for connection and teaching. He taught me that once you accept the fact that you can die at any time, you might not be as ambitious about the wrong things.

There were moments of profound sadness, like when I helped him move from his chair to his bed, feeling the fragility of his frame. But there was also immense joy and laughter, as Morrie shared anecdotes and observations, his humor undiminished. He even met my wife, Janine, who sang for him, bringing a tear to his eye and a rare smile to his face, a testament to his enduring love for music and human connection.

Our final Tuesday arrived, a day etched with the profound weight of an ending. Morrie could barely speak, his voice thin and raspy, but his message was clear, whispered from his heart: "You . . . are a good soul." He patted my hand, keeping it on his chest, a gesture of deep affection and finality. I struggled to say goodbye, but he understood. He had touched me deeply, and I knew I would carry his lessons - his final thesis - with me always.

Morrie passed away on a Saturday, just as he had predicted, choosing to go when he was alone, sparing his loved ones the immediate agony. But the lessons he imparted on those fourteen Tuesdays, about love, forgiveness, community, and living a meaningful life, had already transformed me. I learned to re-evaluate my priorities, to reconnect with my estranged brother, and to truly cherish the people and moments that truly matter, understanding that the most important thing in life is to love and be loved.
