Mind Control

The final installment of the Bill Hodges Trilogy garnered significant praise for its compelling characters and engaging narrative. Reviewers consistently highlighted the deeply beloved protagonist, Bill Hodges, often described as a relatable, determined, and kind figure with whom many readers formed a strong emotional connection. His partner, Holly Gibney, also received widespread acclaim for her growth, unique personality, and crucial role, with their heartwarming dynamic frequently cited as a series highlight. The plot itself was lauded as interesting, bizarre, and inventive, building to a satisfying and climactic conclusion that many found to be an unputdownable page-turner. The return of the antagonist, Brady Hartsfield, was seen as a masterful stroke, solidifying his place as a truly despicable and compelling villain. Many readers particularly enjoyed the shift in tone towards Stephen King's signature supernatural horror, finding it a brilliant and well-executed evolution for the series.

However, this very shift in genre proved to be a point of contention for some critics. While many welcomed the paranormal elements, others found the sudden introduction of supernatural forces to be jarring and inconsistent with the more grounded crime thriller style of the previous books, leading to a plot perceived as far-fetched, nonsensical, or overly preposterous. Some reviewers also noted issues with pacing, finding certain technical details drawn out or parts of the story slow, while others felt the trilogy's overall cohesion was weak, suggesting the second book could be skipped without losing much of the main narrative. A few found the character of Bill Hodges less compelling or relevant in this installment, and Holly occasionally irritating. Additionally, a minority of readers expressed disappointment with the ending, considering it underwhelming or overly simplistic, and one reviewer raised concerns about the graphic portrayal of suicide.

Ultimately, "End of Watch" is a highly discussed conclusion that successfully delivers an emotional and memorable experience for many, despite its divisive genre direction. Readers who are deeply invested in the Bill Hodges characters and their relationships will likely appreciate the fitting conclusion to their journey. This book is particularly recommended for fans of Stephen King's classic blend of suspense, horror, and supernatural themes, who are open to a genre blend within a detective series and value strong character development over strict adherence to a single genre.
