Moonlight Mile

Reviewers largely celebrated the return of Dennis Lehane's popular Boston private investigators, Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro, after an eleven-year absence. Many praised Lehane's consistently strong writing, noting his ability to craft engaging dialogue that provides occasional moments of humor and a natural flow. The book is frequently described as fast-paced and engrossing, offering a compelling look into the darker aspects of society and humanity. Readers appreciated the familiar feel of the series, the return of beloved characters, and Lehane's vivid descriptions that create a strong sense of place in Boston and the surrounding areas. The narrative is often highlighted as thought-provoking, delving into moral dilemmas and the pervasive impact of economic struggles, which contributes to a richer and deeper story for the protagonists.

However, some reviews suggest that this installment does not quite reach the heights of Lehane's most acclaimed works, with a few calling it "commercial Lehane on cruise control" or lacking the profound depth of his masterpieces. Common criticisms include a plot that can feel somewhat thin or predictable at times, and some readers found the central case to be less shocking or surprising than they had hoped. Concerns were raised about the development of certain new characters, while others found the dialogue of a particular young character to be implausible for her age and background. A few reviewers also mentioned that the pacing occasionally drags with excessive conversation, and some wished for more active involvement from Angie Gennaro and other cherished secondary characters. Additionally, some felt the book introduced political commentary to an intrusive degree and that certain character portrayals leaned towards stereotypes.

Despite these mixed opinions, many reviewers ultimately view this as a fitting and often tender farewell to the Kenzie and Gennaro series, offering a satisfying sense of closure for the characters. The book is generally regarded as a solid crime noir read that, while sometimes somber, provides a positive and hopeful resolution for the protagonists. It is highly recommended for long-time fans of the series, particularly those who enjoyed previous installments, as it revisits a significant past case. While some new readers found it accessible enough to be read independently, others strongly suggest reading earlier books in the series to fully appreciate the narrative's emotional and moral complexities. Ultimately, readers seeking an engaging, character-driven mystery with a strong sense of atmosphere and ethical introspection will likely find this book a worthwhile experience.
