Murder in Mesopotamia (Greenway E.)

Readers widely praise "The ABC Murders" for its intriguing and expertly crafted plot, a hallmark of Agatha Christie's work. Many found the story captivating and were particularly surprised by the ending and the clever red herrings that effectively misdirected their suspicions. The novel showcases Hercule Poirot's famed "little gray cells" at their best, often in an amusing dynamic with Captain Hastings and effective collaboration with Inspector Japp. Reviewers also appreciate the classic affluent settings and historical ambiance of the 1930s, which consistently draw them into Christie's world. For those who experienced the BBC dramatizations, the full-cast productions were often described as engaging, well-acted, and akin to listening to a play or movie.

Despite the widespread enjoyment, some reviewers found the plot to be somewhat predictable, especially if they had encountered the story before or were very familiar with Christie's style. One specific criticism pointed to the central motive as feeling overly complex or "over-constructed," which detracted from its believability for that reader. For those listening to audio versions, particularly the dramatizations, a common concern was the abridged nature of these productions. These often skipped characterization or shortened the plot, potentially making it harder to follow for new listeners or those unfamiliar with the unabridged book. Additionally, the vocal portrayal of Poirot in some audio versions did not always meet listeners' ideal expectations, with some finding it difficult to distinguish characters in full-cast productions.

Overall, "The ABC Murders" is largely considered a fascinating and classic Hercule Poirot mystery that keeps many readers thoroughly engaged. It is highly recommended for existing fans of Agatha Christie and crime fiction enthusiasts, particularly those who appreciate intricate puzzles and stories set in historical periods. It also serves as an excellent standalone introduction to Hercule Poirot for newcomers. While the full book is generally recommended for the most complete experience, the dramatized versions can offer an enjoyable, quick listen for those who prefer radio plays, provided they are aware of the potential for a condensed plot.
