Mystique Et Zen

Thomas Merton's "Mystics and Zen Masters" is widely praised for its insightful and sympathetic exploration of mystical religious experiences, particularly highlighting the commonalities between Christian mystics and Eastern spiritual practices, especially Zen Buddhism. Reviewers appreciate Merton's deep intellect and ability to logically break down complex subjects, making profound spiritual insights accessible. The book is lauded for its significant contribution to ecumenical thought, demonstrating how different religions can share underlying truths and how Catholics can embrace appreciation for other faiths while maintaining their principles. Many readers found the essays thought-provoking, enjoyable, and inspiring, leading some to further explore contemplative practices or other mystical texts. Merton's defense of spiritual disciplines like celibacy and the contemplative path, alongside his attempt to reframe existentialist thought's spiritual basis, are also noted as valuable contributions. Despite its age, many find the book's themes and discussions remarkably relevant today.

However, the collection of essays also draws several criticisms. Some reviewers point out that the book's arguments are deeply rooted in the context of Vatican II, which can make certain sections feel dated or overly familiar to contemporary readers. A recurring concern is Merton's approach to Eastern philosophies, with some finding his Western rational analysis of Zen to be "un-Zenlike" or too academic, wishing for more practical insights into Zen's precepts. The book's essay compilation format sometimes leads to unevenness, with certain chapters feeling disconnected from the main themes or overlapping in content. Its dense theological and philosophical language means it is often described as a "deep read" that may be challenging for those without a strong background in history, philosophy, or religious studies. Furthermore, some readers found specific viewpoints, such as those concerning gender, to be objectionable or reflecting a dated perspective. The title itself is occasionally criticized for potentially misrepresenting the book's broader coverage of Christian contemplative history beyond just Zen.

Ultimately, "Mystics and Zen Masters" is considered a significant, albeit challenging, work that offers profound insights into the universal human spiritual quest. While not an introductory text and sometimes demanding in its intellectual rigor, it serves as an important resource for understanding inter-religious dialogue and the contemplative tradition. This book is particularly recommended for Roman Catholics interested in reconciling their faith with an appreciation for other religions, as well as for readers with a solid philosophical and historical background who enjoy dense, analytical theological discussions. It will appeal to those interested in the relationship between Zen and Christianity, the history of monasticism, or anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of contemplative prayer. However, readers looking for an easy read, a direct guide to Zen practice, or inspiration that avoids deep theological analysis might find it less suitable.
