The seemingly idyllic town of Derry, Maine, harbors a sinister secret, a malevolent entity that awakens every 27 years to gorge itself on the fear of children. In the summer of 1958, a group of outcast children, each burdened by their own fears and struggles, find themselves drawn together. They are Bill Denbrough, haunted by his brother's death and his stutter; the intelligent, overweight Ben Hanscom; the wisecracking Richie Tozier; the asthmatic hypochondriac Eddie Kaspbrak; the logical and skeptical Stan Uris; the abused but resilient Beverly Marsh, the only girl in their group; and Mike Hanlon, the last to join, who brings with him a deep knowledge of Derry's dark history. They call themselves the Losers' Club, a band of misfits who discover they are all experiencing terrifying encounters with the same shapeshifting entity.

As the Losers' Club confronts Pennywise in its various terrifying forms - a werewolf, a mummy, a giant bird, a rotting corpse - they realize that their shared belief and unity are their greatest weapons against an entity that feeds on fear. They delve into Derry's disturbing past, uncovering a history rife with violence and unexplained horrors, all connected to "It". Their journey takes them into the dark, labyrinthine sewers beneath Derry, the creature's lair, where they make a blood oath: if "It" ever returns, they will too, to finish what they started. Mike Hanlon, the only member of the Losers' Club who remained in Derry and retained his memories, makes the dreaded calls, summoning his childhood friends back to their hometown. Now adults, scattered across the country and largely forgetting the horrors of their youth, they feel an undeniable pull to return, a promise they made in blood so long ago. The memories, however, are slow to return, surfacing in disorienting flashes and a growing sense of dread that permeates the very air of Derry.

As they reunite, the Losers' Club grapples with the resurgence of their deepest childhood fears, which Pennywise, stronger and more malevolent than ever, eagerly exploits. They are forced to confront not only the ancient evil but also the traumas of their past, both from "It" and from the abusive households and bullies that scarred their youth. The town itself seems to conspire against them, its insidious influence making it difficult to remember, to believe, and to fight.

Their final confrontation takes them once more into the sewers, into the heart of "It's" lair, where the creature reveals its true, cosmic form: a monstrous, giant spider. The battle is not just physical but a struggle of wills, a test of their collective belief and courage against an entity that embodies all their fears. Sacrifices are made, and the bonds of their friendship are tested to their limits. Eddie Kaspbrak, in a moment of profound bravery, delivers a critical blow to the creature but succumbs to his injuries. Bill and Richie venture into the creature's mind through the Ritual of Chüd, encountering the vast, horrifying "Deadlights" and the ancient Turtle, a benevolent cosmic entity.

Ultimately, through their combined strength, belief, and an unwavering refusal to be afraid, the Losers' Club manages to defeat "It," destroying its heart and its eggs. With the creature's demise, Derry itself begins to crumble, the evil that had permeated its very foundations finally collapsing.
