Pride and PrejudiceOther editions (5730)
Despite Darcy's initial disdain, a subtle attraction begins to form between him and Elizabeth, even as Jane and Bingley's romance blossoms. Yet, this burgeoning affection is complicated by Darcy's haughty demeanor and Elizabeth's quick judgment, fueled by the charming but deceitful Mr. Wickham, who paints Darcy as a villain. Wickham, a militia officer, weaves a tale of Darcy's injustice, further solidifying Elizabeth's prejudice against him. These early impressions set the stage for a series of misunderstandings and social encounters that highlight the rigid class distinctions and societal expectations of the time.
The course of true love for Jane and Bingley is abruptly interrupted when Bingley, influenced by Darcy and his sisters who disapprove of the Bennets' lower social standing, suddenly departs for London. Elizabeth, believing Darcy to be solely responsible for her sister's heartbreak and still swayed by Wickham's falsehoods, feels her animosity towards him deepen. It is during this period of estrangement that Mr. Collins, a pompous clergyman and the entailed heir to the Bennet estate, proposes to Elizabeth. She staunchly refuses him, much to her mother's dismay, and he quickly turns his affections to Elizabeth's pragmatic friend, Charlotte Lucas, who accepts him for the sake of security.
Later, during a tour of Derbyshire with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth unexpectedly finds herself at Pemberley, Darcy's magnificent estate. There, she hears glowing accounts of his character from his housekeeper and encounters Darcy himself, whose demeanor has softened considerably. His unexpected kindness and the revelation of his honorable treatment of his younger sister, Georgiana, begin to chip away at Elizabeth's firmly held prejudices. It is then that she receives a letter from Darcy, explaining his actions regarding Bingley and Jane, and exposing Wickham's true, unscrupulous nature. This letter serves as a turning point, forcing Elizabeth to re-evaluate her own hasty judgments and the pride that had clouded her perception.
However, scandal soon strikes the Bennet family when the impulsive youngest sister, Lydia, elopes with Mr. Wickham. The family is thrown into turmoil, their reputation teetering on the brink of ruin. It is through the intervention of an unlikely benefactor that Wickham is persuaded to marry Lydia, thus saving the family from complete disgrace. Elizabeth later discovers, to her astonishment and profound gratitude, that it was Mr. Darcy who orchestrated and paid for the entire arrangement, motivated by his growing love for her and a sense of responsibility.
With the truth of Wickham's character laid bare and Darcy's true nobility revealed, Elizabeth's feelings undergo a complete transformation. Bingley and Jane are reunited, their affection rekindled, and Bingley at last proposes, much to Jane's joy and Mrs. Bennet's relief. Soon after, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy's formidable aunt, attempts to prevent a rumored engagement between Darcy and Elizabeth, inadvertently confirming Darcy's continued affection. When Darcy proposes to Elizabeth once more, this time with humility and genuine affection, she joyfully accepts, having overcome her prejudice, just as he has overcome his pride. The two couples, Jane and Bingley, and Elizabeth and Darcy, marry, finding happiness in unions founded on understanding, respect, and a love that transcends societal expectations and initial misjudgments.
