Orson Welles on Shakespeare

This collection is highly praised as an essential acquisition for fans and scholars interested in Orson Welles, particularly his theatrical endeavors. Readers value the unique insight it offers into Welles's creative mind and his distinctive adaptations of Shakespearean works, including his "Macbeth," "Julius Caesar," and "The Five Kings." The book is commended for providing significant contextual information through its editorial content and foreword, which enrich the understanding of these fascinating dramatic documents. It is widely regarded as a masterclass in adapting classic literature for specific dramatic purposes.

However, some minor criticisms were noted regarding the editorial quality in certain sections. One reviewer pointed out minor errors within the general introduction and the specific introduction to the "Macbeth" script, suggesting that the scholarship in these particular parts may not be entirely meticulous. While Welles's "Macbeth" script is considered a fascinating document, it is also acknowledged that it does not necessarily surpass the greatness of Shakespeare's original play.

In conclusion, this book is seen as a highly valuable and informative resource for anyone wanting to explore Orson Welles's unique approach to Shakespearean drama. It provides a deep understanding of his interpretive genius and theatrical vision. This collection is particularly recommended for Orson Welles completists, theater enthusiasts, and those interested in the art of adapting classic texts, especially as a complementary read for those familiar with his other cinematic and stage productions.
