Os Románov. 1613-1918 (Em Portuguese do Brasil)

Readers praise The Romanovs as an astounding and astonishing survey of this epic imperial family, offering an incredible and insightful read into over three centuries of Russian history. The book is lauded for its meticulous research, drawing on newly accessible documents to debunk myths and provide a truly factual history. Reviewers highlight the author's excellent, engaging, and literary writing style, which brings the Romanov dynasty to life in a unique and modern way. The narrative is described as dramatic, entertaining, and captivating, focusing on the personalities, virtues, and flaws of the Tsars and Tsarinas. Its well-structured format, divided into "Acts" and "Scenes" with helpful "casting" lists and family trees, makes the vast amount of information manageable and aids in keeping track of the numerous historical figures. Many found it fascinating to learn about the reigns of figures like Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, and Alexander I, appreciating the rich human nature and intrigue presented.

However, some readers found certain aspects of the book less favorable. A recurring criticism points to the author's perceived tendency to sensationalize and overemphasize the more lurid details, particularly the extensive focus on the sexual lives and debauchery of the Romanovs and their court. This pronounced emphasis on sex and violence, including descriptions of torture and executions, was considered by some to be excessive, unnecessary, and at times "weird," detracting from the historical substance. Reviewers also felt that the wide scope, while comprehensive, sometimes led to a lack of adequate depth in analyzing major historical events or the personalities of certain Tsars, with important political and social contexts occasionally overshadowed by personal anecdotes and court intrigue. Some expressed a desire for more balanced portrayals, feeling that negative attributes were highlighted over positive achievements, and that the author's apparent dislike for the dynasty was evident, leading to insufficient attention to significant accomplishments.

Ultimately, The Romanovs is widely considered an overwhelmingly entertaining and thoroughly researched book that effectively draws readers into the fascinating history of the dynasty. While some may find its focus on personal drama and explicit details occasionally distracting, its strengths lie in its captivating narrative and vivid characterizations. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in a dramatic, personality-focused account of Russian imperial history, especially those who enjoy stories of court intrigue, power struggles, and the personal lives of rulers. It serves as an excellent introduction to the Romanov era, offering an accessible and engaging read for anyone looking to understand this significant period without necessarily delving into highly academic or exhaustive analytical history.
