Otherwise Normal People

The book is widely praised for its excellent and engaging writing style, often described as conversational, well-written, and even enthralling. Many readers found it to be an enlightening and informative introduction to the previously unknown or unimagined world of competitive rose gardening. Reviewers appreciated learning about the history of roses, grooming techniques, and the intricacies of rose competitions. The author successfully brings to life the enchanting world of rosarians, highlighting their passion, dedication, and often quirky personalities. The enthusiasm depicted proved infectious for many, inspiring some to consider gardening or even growing roses themselves, and offering a gentle, entertaining read that celebrates human obsession and ingenuity.

Despite the overall positive reception, some reviewers noted a few areas for improvement. A common critique was the absence of photographs, with many feeling that visual aids would have greatly enhanced the experience, especially given the detailed descriptions of roses and the unique contraptions used by growers. Some readers wished for deeper character development, feeling that the book occasionally skimmed the surface of the individuals involved. A few found the extensive descriptions of clothing unnecessary or tedious. Additionally, while generally engaging, some felt the narrative occasionally became repetitive or that the depicted rose show lacked the excitement they anticipated, leading to it not being a "page-turner" for everyone.

Ultimately, the book is considered a largely successful and entertaining exploration of a niche subject. It offers a fascinating glimpse into a world driven by passion and meticulous dedication, often making readers feel better about their own interests or inspiring new ones. This book would particularly appeal to gardeners, especially those with an interest in roses, or anyone curious about the human element behind intense hobbies and competitions. It is also recommended for readers who enjoy well-written, character-driven non-fiction that celebrates the extraordinary commitment of "otherwise normal people" to their chosen pursuits, making it a delightful gift for gardening enthusiasts or those who appreciate stories of unique obsessions.
