Our Table

"Our Table" receives widespread acclaim from reviewers who praise its heartwarming and timely message. Many describe it as a sweet and adorable story that effectively highlights the importance of family connection and shared moments in an increasingly technology-driven world. Reviewers particularly appreciate the book's gentle approach to discussing the balance between device use and human interaction, noting that it delivers its message without being preachy or condemning technology outright. The illustrations are consistently lauded for their beauty and their powerful use of color to convey emotion, transitioning from subdued tones to vibrant hues as the family reconnects. Readers also commend the book for its themes of problem-solving, teamwork, and the empowering initiative of its young protagonist, as well as its inclusive and anti-bias representation.

However, a few reviewers express strong criticisms, primarily centered on the book's fantastical elements. Some found the core premise, where a family's dining table magically shrinks and disappears due to disuse, to be unrealistic or jarring, detracting from their enjoyment of the narrative. These readers felt that this magical realism made the story less believable and did not align with their expectations for a family-focused book, leading to a sense of disconnect with the plot. One review was notably harsh, dismissing the book as "vulgar" without providing specific reasons for this strong disapproval.

Overall, "Our Table" is celebrated as a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant picture book that successfully addresses a relevant contemporary issue. Despite minor reservations from some about its fantastical plot device, the overwhelming sentiment is that the book's core message about nurturing family bonds and fostering togetherness is beautifully conveyed. It is highly recommended for young readers, typically ages 4-8, and their families, offering a gentle yet impactful reminder to prioritize human connection, appreciate shared experiences, and navigate the challenges of modern digital life. The book will particularly appeal to those seeking inspiring stories about communication, collaboration, and the joy of creating lasting family memories.
