Pablo De Segovia, The Spanish Sharper: Translated From The Original Of Francisco De Quevedo-villegas. Illustrated With One Hundred And Ten Drawings By Daniel Vierge

The reviews widely celebrate this book as a classic of 17th-century Spanish literature and a pivotal work within the picaresque genre. Readers consistently praise its brilliant and distinctive style, highlighting the author's masterful command of language, impressive vocabulary, and ingenious use of conceptism, wordplay, and hyperbolic descriptions. Many find the novel exceptionally humorous, noting that its exaggerated satire, grotesque situations, and witty insults still provoke laughter centuries later. Beyond its comedic value, the book is appreciated for offering a fascinating, albeit harsh, portrayal of life in Golden Age Spain, vividly depicting the social struggles, corruption, and the difficulties of social mobility during that era. Its dynamic plot, filled with a rapid succession of events and characters, ensures a consistently engaging and entertaining reading experience for those who connect with its unique style.

Despite its many strengths, several reviewers point out significant challenges in reading the book. The archaic Spanish and the author's convoluted, circuitous narrative style can make the text difficult to comprehend, often requiring constant recourse to footnotes or annotated editions. Some readers found the humor did not land for them, leading to a lack of engagement or even boredom. Critics also note that the narrative structure can feel fragmented, with a series of loosely connected episodes rather than a cohesive plot, and some found the ending to be abrupt, diminishing the overall sense of completeness. Furthermore, the author's cynical and unforgiving perspective on his characters, along with his perceived moral condemnation of those attempting to rise above their social standing, was a point of contention for some, who felt it reflected a rigid and at times unsympathetic worldview.

Overall, the book is considered a literary masterpiece and a significant contribution to the picaresque tradition, valued for its linguistic brilliance and enduring humor, despite its demanding nature. It is highly recommended for readers who appreciate the intricacies of Golden Age Spanish literature and are prepared to engage with an older, more complex linguistic style, ideally with the aid of a well-annotated edition. This book would particularly appeal to those interested in satirical and grotesque comedy, as well as readers seeking a vivid, albeit critical, window into the social realities of 17th-century Spain. However, due to its challenging language and unique structure, it is often suggested that more experienced readers or those already familiar with classical literature might better appreciate its nuanced pleasures than beginners.
