The book is widely praised as a captivating and immersive read, with many reviewers finding it impossible to put down. Readers lauded its powerful storytelling and compelling characters, noting it often became one of their best reading experiences. A significant positive aspect is its rich historical and cultural depth, particularly in depicting the lives and struggles of Koreans in Japan from the early 1900s to 1989. Reviewers highlighted learning a great deal about these two cultures and the historical context, with the narrative praised for its authentic feel. The story is described as a deeply moving exploration of themes such as family sacrifice, endurance in an unfair world, and the universal challenge of making a living, all while maintaining a surprisingly fast pace despite its comprehensive scope.

Despite its strengths, the book is noted for its emotional intensity, with some readers finding it heavy, depressing, and heartbreaking. Its considerable length was also mentioned, taking some readers longer than their usual pace to complete. A few reviewers pointed out the inclusion of some sexual scenes, which, while acknowledged by some as contributing to the historical realism, could be uncomfortable for others. One minor critique noted that the translation, while generally good, could have been improved in places.

Overall, the book emerges as a highly impactful and memorable work, leaving a lasting impression on its readers. It is strongly recommended for those who appreciate expansive historical fiction and family sagas that delve into complex social and cultural issues. Readers interested in gaining deep insight into Korean and Japanese history, especially the experiences of immigrants and their descendants, will find this a profound read. It will particularly resonate with those who value character-driven narratives focusing on resilience, survival, and the enduring strength of family bonds, even when confronting challenging and emotionally demanding subject matter.
