Patriot Games

In the heart of London, on a day too bright for umbrellas, American historian Jack Ryan stands with his wife and daughter, a tourist moments away from becoming something else entirely. The sudden crack of a grenade and the chatter of automatic weapons fire rips through the peaceful afternoon on The Mall. A Rolls-Royce is ambushed, and without a conscious thought, the former Marine in Ryan takes over. He moves low and fast, his mind a blur of instinct and forgotten training. He tackles one gunman, his shoulder shattering as he drives the man's head into the car's bumper. Grabbing the fallen terrorist's pistol, he confronts the other, and in a blinding exchange of gunfire, a second man falls dead. As sirens wail and soldiers run toward him, Ryan stands over the bodies, his shoulder on fire, staring into the cold, empty eyes of the man he captured - a young terrorist named Sean Miller - and feels a chill that has nothing to do with shock.

Back home in Annapolis, the quiet life of a history professor at the Naval Academy feels like a borrowed dream. Ryan tries to lose himself in the familiar rhythm of teaching midshipmen and assembling Christmas toys late at night, but the memory of Miller's soulless gaze lingers. The world seems tilted on a new, more dangerous axis. His unease is given a voice when an FBI agent pays him a visit, delivering a warning born not of evidence, but of a veteran cop's intuition. The threat is a ghost, a whisper, but it is enough. Ryan begins spending his afternoons on the Academy's pistol range under the tutelage of a Marine Sergeant Major, reacquainting himself with the cold mechanics of firearms, trying to prepare for a danger he cannot name but can no longer ignore.

On a miserable, storm-tossed Christmas morning, Sean Miller is being transferred to a maximum-security prison. The operation is secret, the route chosen at random. As the prison van is driven aboard a ferry to the Isle of Wight, the gale churns the sea into a gray, violent misery. The crossing is short, but long enough. The sharp report of automatic weapons cuts through the wind's howl, followed by the screams of civilians. Miller's comrades from the Ulster Liberation Army have come for him. The assault is swift, professional, and utterly ruthless. Standing over a dying policeman, Miller takes a pistol from his rescuer. “Gratitude, Mr. Highland,” he says, quoting a line from Stalin as he looks down at the man who had once saved him from a prison beating, “is a disease of dogs.” Two shots echo over the water, and as the terrorists make their escape in a rubber boat, Miller has only one question for his commander: “Where's that Ryan bastard?”

The attack comes without warning, on a highway just outside Annapolis. For Cathy Ryan, it begins as a routine drive home after a long day of surgery, with four-year-old Sally in the seat beside her. She notices a blue van pulling alongside her Porsche, its side door sliding open. For a horrifying instant, she sees a man kneeling with a weapon. She stomps on the brakes a fraction of a second before a white flash erupts from the van. The world dissolves into a storm of shattering glass and screeching metal as the sports car slams into a concrete bridge piling. The last thing she knows is the sight of her daughter being thrown forward like a broken doll.

The phone call finds Jack in his office. The drive to the hospital with his friend, Navy pilot Robby Jackson, is a blur of speed and dread. In the sterile waiting room of the Shock-Trauma Center, time ceases to have meaning. He sits for hours, a hollowed-out man, until a surgeon appears, his gown stained with blood. The news is a brutal litany of injuries: a flailed chest, shattered legs, massive internal damage. Sally's heart had stopped. They had brought her back. Her life now hangs on the function of her lacerated liver. She is alive, the doctor says, but only just. In that moment of profound anguish, something inside Jack hardens into cold fury. He is no longer a victim or a bystander. He makes a call to an old contact at the CIA. He wants in. He wants to hunt.

In a windowless cubicle at Langley, Ryan immerses himself in the clandestine world of the ULA. He sifts through a sea of raw intelligence - satellite photos of desert training camps, contradictory informant reports, and cryptic signals intercepts - searching for a pattern, a weakness, a single thread to pull that might unravel the entire organization. He learns of their leader, the ruthless ideologue Kevin O'Donnell, and begins to piece together the profile of a group more disciplined and more dangerous than any he has studied. The work is a frustrating grind of dead ends and tantalizing near-misses. A planned raid on the ULA's Libyan camp, facilitated by Jack's own analysis, is aborted at the last minute. The enemy remains a ghost, always one step ahead, a shadow that mocks him from a thousand miles away.

The final confrontation comes to his own home. On a hot, humid evening, the Prince and Princess of Wales arrive for a private dinner at Ryan's cliffside house on the Chesapeake Bay. The security is heavy, a mix of British bodyguards and American Secret Service agents, but the ULA has planned for them. A brilliantly executed diversion - a faked electrical problem - draws the security team's attention to the road just as the terrorists emerge from the woods. The assault is a storm of silenced automatic weapons fire. The outer perimeter is wiped out in seconds. The gunmen storm the house, and once again Jack finds himself face-to-face with Sean Miller. “So we meet again,” the terrorist says, his smile a mask of triumph.

But the terrorists have made a fatal miscalculation. They failed to account for Robby Jackson. The Navy pilot, hidden upstairs, retrieves Jack's shotgun. From a concealed overlook, he turns the tide in a deafening blast of buckshot. In the bloody chaos, Jack, Robby, and the Prince manage to get the women and Sally out of the house and down the treacherous cliff face to the terrorists' waiting escape boats. As a massive thunderstorm breaks over the bay, they steal one of the boats and flee into the darkness, pursued by the remaining gunmen.

The desperate flight across the stormy Chesapeake ends at the seawall of the Naval Academy. With the help of the base's Marine guards, they make a stand. The pursuing boat is driven off in a final, furious exchange of gunfire. A larger Navy patrol boat gives chase, cornering the terrorists against a freighter in Baltimore Harbor. When the police and FBI storm the ship, Jack is there. He confronts a terrified Sean Miller, the cold rage that has fueled him for months finally boiling over. He presses a pistol into the terrorist's mouth, his finger tightening on the trigger, only to be stopped by the firm hand of the Marine Sergeant Major. “He ain't worth it, Lieutenant.” In that moment, watching the broken man groveling on the deck, Jack knows the fight is truly over. He returns to Annapolis to find his wife in labor, and as he holds his newborn son, the cries of new life wash away the echoes of gunfire, a final, fierce affirmation that his world has been saved.
