Plutarch’s Lives

This collection of essays is highly praised for its engaging and impressive exploration of ancient philosophy. Readers found the discussions, particularly Plutarch's energetic critiques of Epicurean thought and his defense of other philosophical schools, to be both detailed and entertaining. The essays are commended for offering profound discussions and deep dives into the works and perspectives of ancient thinkers. One reviewer specifically noted the widespread influence of figures like Epicurus on major historical figures, finding the philosophical perspectives on life captivating and inspiring further reading. Even a technically dense essay on ancient music was acknowledged for providing valuable insights.

While generally very positive, the reviews offer a couple of minor points for consideration. One reader, despite thoroughly enjoying the intellectual debates, expressed personal sympathy for some of Epicurus's ideas, suggesting that readers might not always align with the author's philosophical stance. Additionally, the essay "On Music" was described as "very technical," which could present a challenge for readers not accustomed to specialized discussions on the subject.

Overall, this volume is presented as a compelling read for those deeply interested in the study and critique of ancient philosophies. It is particularly suited for readers who appreciate rigorous intellectual debates, enjoy exploring the nuances of classical thought, and are curious about the historical impact of philosophical ideas. Those who welcome detailed, even technical, discussions on subjects ranging from ethics to ancient music will likely find this book a rewarding and thought-provoking experience.
