Pollyanna Grows Up the Second Glad Book

Many readers found this sequel to be a charming and engaging continuation of Pollyanna's story, with several enjoying it even more than the original. Reviewers consistently praised the portrayal of Pollyanna as she grows into a young woman, noting that she retains her core optimism and cheerful spirit while still maturing. The book is lauded for its ability to inspire and spread hope, with Pollyanna's unique perspective helping to transform the lives of those around her and foster genuine friendships. Readers often found the plot intriguing, appreciating the humor, heartwarming moments, and the ultimately satisfying, happy ending that tied up various narrative threads.

Despite its positive reception, the book faced several criticisms. A common point of contention was the narrative structure, which often felt like two distinct stories separated by a significant time jump, leading to a loss of flow and a sense of being rushed. Many reviewers found the romantic subplots to be overly convoluted, predictable, and at times, unrealistic or "cringeworthy," with characters frequently misunderstanding each other's affections. Another significant concern was the characterization of Aunt Polly, whose apparent regression to her earlier bitter self was deemed unbelievable by some. Additionally, a few readers felt that Pollyanna, despite her age, remained too naive or tactless in certain situations, and that some of the book's social and romantic sensibilities felt dated. Minor content concerns, including mild language and veiled references to sensitive situations, were also noted.

Overall, "Pollyanna Grows Up" offers a mixed but generally positive experience for fans of the original. While it may suffer from structural issues and a somewhat predictable, drawn-out romantic plot, its enduring appeal lies in the continued presence of its beloved protagonist and her unwavering spirit. This book is best suited for readers who cherished the first "Pollyanna" novel and are eager to discover her journey into young adulthood, especially those who appreciate classic, feel-good stories with a strong message of optimism and happy resolutions, and are willing to overlook some dated narrative conventions.
