To escape a life of servitude, war orphan Rin defies all expectations by earning a place at Sinegard, the most elite military academy in the Nikan Empire. For a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south, however, acceptance is not the same as belonging. Targeted by her classmates and overlooked by her teachers, Rin discovers a dormant, lethal power within herself: an aptitude for the mythical art of shamanism. This power, guided by a seemingly mad professor and psychoactive substances, connects her to the vengeful god known as the Phoenix, an entity that may be her only hope for survival.
