Population

The book, "Population: 485," is widely praised for its engaging portrayal of volunteer firefighting and small-town life in rural Wisconsin. Many readers appreciated the detailed and often suspenseful accounts of emergency calls, offering a unique insight into a vital but often overlooked segment of American society. Reviewers frequently highlight Michael Perry's skilled writing, noting his ability to craft beautiful prose, weave compelling stories, and eloquently describe the people, situations, and emotions he encounters. The narrative is often described as both hilarious and deeply moving, blending laugh-out-loud humor with tender, sweet, and sometimes sad reflections. Readers found the characters relatable and the depiction of community heartwarming, showcasing neighbors who genuinely care for and support one another. The author's blend of intellectual observation with a down-to-earth perspective resonated with many, providing a rich, introspective look at what it means to belong to a place and the profound bonds that hold a small community together.

Despite its strengths, some readers found "Population: 485" to have certain drawbacks. A common critique is that the title can be misleading, as the book focuses more on the author's experiences as a volunteer first responder rather than a broad cast of quirky town characters. Some reviewers felt the book lacked a clear focus, attempting to cover too many themes without fully developing them, and that the humor, while present, occasionally felt strained or inefficiently set up. A few found the narrative to be less than compelling overall, describing parts as a "work" to get through or noting that the author's use of elevated vocabulary sometimes felt distracting or "shoehorned in," hindering the flow of the stories. Additionally, some readers desired a more critical examination of the underlying social issues prevalent in rural communities, feeling that the book sometimes offered an overly romanticized or uncritical view of small-town life, overlooking its potential "dark underbelly" or deeper societal complexities.

Overall, "Population: 485" offers a unique and often powerful memoir that explores themes of community, service, life, and death through the lens of a volunteer firefighter in rural America. It is highly recommended for readers interested in gaining a deep understanding of volunteer emergency services and the intricacies of small-town Midwestern life. The book will particularly appeal to those who appreciate a literary style that balances humor and pathos, personal anecdotes with philosophical musings, and a genuine affection for its subject matter. Readers who are open to a narrative that blends practical details of emergency response with tender observations about human connection, and who can appreciate an author who is both a "man's man" and a sensitive intellectual, are likely to find this a rewarding and thought-provoking read.
