Evelyn Underhill's "Practical Mysticism" challenges the common perception that mysticism is an obscure pursuit reserved for a select few. This work presents mysticism as a natural human capacity, accessible to everyone within the fabric of daily life, art, and nature. It distinguishes genuine mystical experience as a quest for union with ultimate Reality, rather than an engagement with magic or occultism.

The book offers guidance on cultivating a deeper spiritual awareness, emphasizing self-discipline, self-awareness, and a profound engagement with the world. Underhill demonstrates how embracing this perspective can lead to increased inner peace, a sense of purpose, and a more authentic, fulfilling life.

What other readers say

Liked

Reviewers widely praise Evelyn Underhill's "Practical Mysticism" for its remarkably clear, elegant, and accessible prose, making a complex subject understandable for a general audience. Many found the writing beautiful, poignant, and even "sparkling," transforming potentially abstruse concepts into compelling insights. The book is lauded for its profound ideas and its ability to inspire readers, offering a fresh perspective on reality and spiritual practice. Despite being rooted in a Christian tradition, many readers appreciated its non-sectarian approach, noting how Underhill draws from diverse mystical traditions and presents universal principles that resonate across different beliefs, even aligning with modern concepts like mindfulness. Its emphasis on how spirituality can transform everyday life, rather than replace it, is frequently highlighted as a core strength.

Disliked

However, some readers found the book to be less "practical" than its title suggests, noting a lack of concrete, step-by-step advice on how to implement mystical practices. While beautifully written, the language was occasionally described as flowery, leading some to zone out or find the text dense and challenging to fully grasp. A few reviewers also mentioned that the content could become repetitive in later sections. Despite its inclusive intentions, the book's Christian foundation becomes increasingly apparent towards the end, which, while not a universal detractor, disappointed some who were hoping for a purely secular exploration of mysticism or found the blend contradictory to their own philosophical views. For some, the intricate writing style made it a slow and demanding read.

In short

Overall, "Practical Mysticism" is considered a worthwhile and profoundly insightful introduction to mysticism, particularly for those interested in a deeper understanding of spiritual consciousness and a transformative approach to life. It is highly recommended for readers who appreciate contemplative texts, elegant prose, and a broad, interfaith perspective on spiritual growth, provided they are open to its underlying Christian framework. While not a conventional "how-to" guide, it serves as an inspiring philosophical exploration of reality, making it ideal for patient and open-minded individuals seeking to expand their spiritual horizons rather than those looking for quick, explicit instructions or a strictly secular approach.
