When a former client, a woman who once radiated life, leaps to her death from a Boston landmark, private investigator Patrick Kenzie is haunted by unanswered questions. What could drive someone to such a devastating end in a mere six months? His investigation uncovers a sadistic stalker who methodically orchestrated her spiral of self-destruction, a monster whose weapon is psychological manipulation, pushing victims to the brink of suicide.
Reuniting with his former partner, Angela Gennaro, Kenzie finds himself locked in a treacherous battle of wits against a brilliant and depraved sociopath. This adversary, who appears untouchable by the law, twists lives and exploits weaknesses, turning the game of cat-and-mouse intensely personal. As the stakes escalate, Kenzie and Gennaro must confront the darkest corners of human cruelty, where survival itself may come at an unbearable cost.

Boston private investigator Patrick Kenzie finds himself adrift, his partnership with Angela Gennaro fractured after their last harrowing case. Angie has moved on, seeking a different path in corporate security, leaving Patrick to navigate the city's underbelly with only the volatile, yet loyal, Bubba Rogowski for backup. Into this fractured existence steps Karen Nichols, a woman whose pristine appearance and quiet desperation belie a terrifying truth: she is being relentlessly stalked. Patrick and Bubba, in their own inimitable fashion, deliver a brutal warning to the stalker, Cody Falk, an upscale predator with a history of such behavior, believing the case closed.
Months later, a chilling headline shatters Patrick's fragile peace: Karen Nichols has leaped to her death from the Custom House tower, a stark, final act of desperation. A wave of guilt washes over Patrick as he remembers a voicemail from Karen, left weeks before her death, a call he never returned, dismissing it as inconsequential at the time. The official ruling is suicide, but Patrick cannot shake the feeling that something far more sinister is at play. He is haunted by the image of the once vibrant Karen, unable to reconcile it with her tragic end.
Driven by a gnawing sense of responsibility, Patrick begins to unravel the threads of Karen's final months. He discovers that her life had systematically fallen apart after their initial intervention, a series of misfortunes too precise to be mere coincidence. As he digs deeper, he uncovers a web of deceit and corruption surrounding Karen's wealthy, patrician family – the Dawes – a clan riddled with hidden resentments and vulnerabilities. The investigation pulls him further into a dark world where an insidious villain, a master of psychological torment, orchestrates the destruction of lives not through brute force, but through insidious manipulation and mind games.
The case intensifies when Patrick realizes this predator is not just a stalker, but a cunning sociopath who delights in pushing his victims to their breaking point, driving them to self-destruction. The villain's methods are chillingly effective, turning the victims' own lives against them. Patrick, with Angela's eventual, albeit reluctant, return to his side, and Bubba's brutal efficiency, finds himself in a desperate battle of wits against an enemy who always seems to be one step ahead. The stakes grow terrifyingly personal as the psychopath begins to target those closest to Patrick, forcing him to confront the limits of his own resolve.
As the layers of the conspiracy peel back, Patrick unearths a tragic past within the Dawe family, a history of destroyed innocence and confusing relationships that provides the fertile ground for the villain's machinations. He engages in a dangerous dance with Karen's psychiatrist, a tense battle of intellect and will, as he tries to piece together the psychological puzzle of her demise. The pursuit takes them from the gritty streets of Boston to the affluent suburbs, revealing a hidden world where wealth and privilege mask profound darkness.
The confrontation with the architect of Karen's destruction is not a simple one; it is a brutal, psychologically charged struggle where the lines between hunter and hunted blur. Patrick, often relying on his sharp insights and the unexpected humor that punctuates the grim reality, descends into the same mind games the villain employs, seeking to beat him at his own twisted craft. The journey is fraught with violence, betrayal, and moments of visceral horror, pushing Patrick to his emotional and physical limits. Ultimately, the truth behind Karen's "suicide" is exposed, a chilling testament to the power of a malevolent will and the desperate measures taken to achieve a twisted form of justice.

Readers widely praise this installment for its return to form, particularly highlighting the dynamic chemistry and witty banter among the beloved main characters, Patrick Kenzie, Angela Gennaro, and Bubba Rogowski. Many found the plot to be addictive, fast-paced, and well-structured, featuring numerous twists and turns that kept them guessing. Lehane's writing style is commended for its ability to create a chilling and competent villain, build dramatic tension, and immerse readers in the gritty Boston setting. The novel is described as a first-rate thriller, engaging from the outset and delivering a wild, enjoyable ride for its cast and audience, with strong characterization that makes the protagonists easy to root for.
Disliked
However, not all reviews were entirely effusive, with some noting that the book, while solid, didn't quite reach the acclaimed heights of earlier series entries like Gone, Baby, Gone or Darkness, Take My Hand. A few readers found certain aspects of the plot, particularly the ending, to be somewhat predictable or less surprising than anticipated. Concerns were also raised about occasional moments where the main character seemed to make naive errors, or where the plot relied on elements that bordered on implausibility due to a large number of co-conspirators. Additionally, some reviewers expressed unease with the protagonists' increasing willingness to operate outside the law, and a small number found the overall depth lacking or the reading experience tedious at times.
In short
Despite these minor criticisms, the general consensus is that this book offers a strong and satisfying contribution to the series. It effectively delivers a tense, character-driven mystery, bringing back the emotional depth and compelling interactions that fans appreciate. Ultimately, this novel is highly recommended for existing fans of the Kenzie & Gennaro series, especially those who enjoy gritty, character-driven thrillers with a strong sense of place, complex antagonists, and a blend of dark themes with moments of humor and camaraderie.
