Pudd'nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins (Illustrated First Edition) 100th Anniversary Collection

Mark Twain's "Pudd'nhead Wilson" is widely praised for its sharp wit, cynical humor, and profound social commentary, often presented as a tragedy disguised by farce. Reviewers highlight Twain's genius in using comedy to address serious subjects such as slavery, racial prejudice, the absurdity of race relations, and the complexities of human nature versus upbringing. The novel is lauded for its intriguing plot, which includes elements of a murder mystery and early forensic science, particularly the groundbreaking use of fingerprints. A consistently celebrated aspect is Pudd'nhead Wilson's Calendar, with its brilliant, often snarky aphorisms that introduce each chapter, providing both humor and philosophical depth. The character of Roxy is frequently singled out as a complex and compelling figure, offering a nuanced portrayal that defies simple categorization.

Despite its many strengths, some reviewers express reservations, primarily concerning the historical use of phonetic dialect for African American characters and the presence of the "N-word." While some acknowledge Twain's intent to critique prejudice within its historical context, others find this language distracting, difficult to read, or even offensive. Additionally, one of the central characters, "Tom," is often described as thoroughly unlikable, a "nasty" and "morally bankrupt" individual, which, while serving the novel's thematic exploration of nature versus nurture, can be off-putting for some readers. A few critics also found the plot to be somewhat muddled or scattered at times, with some elements or characters feeling underdeveloped or not fully serving the main narrative, leading to a less cohesive reading experience for certain individuals.

Overall, "Pudd'nhead Wilson" is regarded as a significant, albeit sometimes overlooked, work in Mark Twain's canon, often considered one of his most scathing critiques of American society. It masterfully blends entertainment with deep social criticism, making it a powerful exploration of identity, power, and justice. While not always considered his greatest work, its enduring relevance and unique narrative approach make it a worthwhile read. This book is particularly recommended for readers who appreciate Mark Twain's distinctive blend of sharp humor and serious social commentary, those interested in historical critiques of race and class, and anyone who enjoys a story that combines mystery with philosophical depth. Readers sensitive to historical racial language should approach with awareness of its period context.
