Pygmalion A Romance In Five Acts

Reviewers widely praise this play for its sharp wit, brilliant satire, and imaginative dialogue, often highlighting its humor and engaging quality. Many found the social commentary on class distinctions, societal expectations, and the role of women to be both profound and remarkably relevant. The characters, particularly Eliza and her transformative journey, along with the eccentric Professor Higgins and Alfred Doolittle, are frequently lauded as strong, well-developed, and captivating. Readers enjoyed Shaw's distinct writing style and his clever adaptation of the ancient Pygmalion myth, noting the play's timeless themes and thought-provoking nature.

Despite its many strengths, some readers found aspects of the play less satisfying. Criticisms include the plot feeling dull or mediocre in its later acts, with the final resolution between characters sometimes described as disappointing or unexpected. Professor Higgins's character, while often seen as brilliant, was also frequently labeled as obnoxious, tyrannical, heartless, and generally unlikable by several reviewers. A few readers felt that important character developments or key events occurred "between scenes," leading to a less immersive experience, and the epilogue was noted as strange or not adding much to the overall story.

Overall, Pygmalion is widely regarded as a classic work, highly acclaimed and the basis for numerous popular adaptations. It offers a rich and thought-provoking experience, particularly for those interested in incisive social critique, the complexities of class, linguistics, and women's independence. While it may defy conventional romantic expectations, its compelling character development, witty exchanges, and satirical humor make it a highly recommended and accessible read for those who appreciate plays that delve into fundamental human questions and societal norms.
