Rave girl (Narratori della Fenice)

The book is widely praised for its incredibly strong and distinctive narrative voice, which many reviewers describe as direct, colloquial, and instantly believable, capturing the protagonist’s perspective with laser-like precision. Morvern Callar, who discovers her boyfriend’s suicide and then proceeds to dispose of his body and publish his novel under her own name, is often seen as a riveting character - naive yet knowing, undereducated but clear about her desires, and intensely vital. Readers found her portrayal uniquely self-sufficient and comfortable in her own skin, with some surprisingly empathizing with her unconventional actions. The novel is lauded for its lyrical quality and the author’s skill in crafting beautiful prose through limited means, often compared to the styles of James Kelman or even Hemingway. Its ability to immerse readers in the 90s rave culture and hedonism, complete with extensive music references, creates a hypnotic atmosphere. The story is considered unique, engaging, and a powerful exploration of existential themes and the absurd, particularly in its depiction of Scottish identity and the desire for escape.

Despite its strengths, the book garners significant criticism, particularly concerning Morvern’s character and the narrative’s execution. Many reviewers found Morvern to be unrelatable, emotionally detached, or even bordering on sociopathic, making it difficult to connect with her. The authenticity of the female voice, written by a male author, is questioned, with some finding Morvern’s detailed focus on personal hygiene and appearance unsettling or an unconvincing attempt to portray femininity. The language itself is sometimes perceived as contrived, with inconsistent grammar and vocabulary that oscillates awkwardly between uneducated slang and more refined expressions. Critics also point to a thin or implausible plot, arguing that the story could be condensed, and that long, repetitive descriptions of trivial details make for a tedious reading experience. Furthermore, some reviewers felt the book presented a narrow and potentially exploitative view of working-class life, focusing on "squalor" and portraying characters as one-dimensional, rather than offering a nuanced representation of the 90s. The constant music mentions were also noted as potentially diminishing the intended effect for readers unfamiliar with the tracks.

Ultimately, this is a highly polarizing novel that evokes strong reactions, with readers either loving it passionately or disliking it intensely. It is recognized as a challenging and unique read, celebrated by many as an unforgettable and ingenious debut that defined a certain aspect of the 90s. The book will likely appeal to readers who appreciate unconventional, morally ambiguous protagonists and a narrative style that prioritizes showing over telling, even if it means an unreflective and bleak tone. Those who enjoy deep character studies, are interested in working-class Scottish culture, or seek an immersive experience of rave-era hedonism will find much to appreciate. However, readers who prefer clear emotional arcs, traditionally relatable characters, or a more straightforward plot may find themselves struggling with its detached perspective and sometimes abrasive style.
