Really Good, Actually A Novel

The book is widely praised for its sharp wit, dark humor, and laugh-out-loud funny moments, often described as sarcastic and self-deprecating. Many reviewers found the protagonist's internal monologue relatable, capturing the chaotic and contradictory nature of processing a significant life event like divorce. Readers appreciated the fresh and honest take on a frequently explored subject, with some noting its insightful portrayal of modern relationships and the journey of self-understanding. The book is lauded for its comedic talent and its ability to blend humor with moments of genuine heart and vulnerability, making the complex, flawed main character feel authentic despite her questionable choices. The audiobook narration also received specific commendation for enhancing the story's depth and humor.

However, a significant number of readers found the book to be a challenging and often frustrating experience. Common criticisms revolve around the protagonist, Maggie, whom many described as insufferable, selfish, emotionally immature, and lacking self-awareness, leading to frequent "cringe-worthy" moments. Some felt the narrative lacked a clear plot or dynamic forward movement, becoming repetitive, rambling, and tedious rather than a cohesive novel. The conversational writing style was perceived by some as amateurish when presented in written form, contributing to a sense of detachment. Reviewers also noted that the constant focus on the protagonist's self-pity and destructive behavior could be exhausting, making it difficult to connect with or root for her. The book's style and references were also noted as potentially less appealing to older demographics.

Ultimately, this book elicits a highly polarized response, with readers either loving its raw, comedic honesty or finding it an unbearable struggle. While many acknowledge its sharp humor, the divisive nature largely stems from the protagonist's flawed character and the unconventional narrative structure. It is best suited for readers who appreciate dark, cringe-inducing comedy and a deeply imperfect, self-deprecating narrator navigating post-divorce chaos. Those who enjoy a stream-of-consciousness style, can relate to millennial experiences, or appreciate an unvarnished look at emotional spiraling, particularly fans of works akin to "Fleabag" or authors like Dolly Alderton, are likely to find this book compelling. The audiobook format is also highly recommended for those considering the read.
