Regina delle ombre

Aelin Ashryver Galathynius has returned to Rifthold, but the golden-haired Queen of Terrasen is buried beneath the guise of Celaena Sardothien, an assassin with debts to pay. She moves through the city's underbelly, a ghost in the shadows of the notorious pleasure hall known as the Vaults, hunting for the man who shattered her life: Arobynn Hamel, the King of the Assassins. But the city she finds is not the one she left. Black-uniformed guards, their eyes devoid of humanity, stalk the streets, and whispers of daily executions fill the air. Her cousin, Aedion Ashryver, has been captured, his execution set as a trap for her. And in the glass castle, Crown Prince Dorian Havilliard is a prisoner in his own body, a Valg demon wearing his face and a black Wyrdstone collar shackling his soul.

Far to the north, in the desolate mountain stronghold of Morath, Manon Blackbeak, Wing Leader of the Ironteeth witches, chafes under the command of Duke Perrington. She and her Thirteen are grounded, forced to endure the company of strange-smelling men and the endless, agonized screams that echo from within the surrounding mountains. Her immortal patience wears thin when the duke gives her an unthinkable order: select a coven of her Blackbeak sisters for breeding experiments with the Valg. The command is an abomination, a violation of their most sacred laws, yet her grandmother, the High Witch, insists on obedience. As Manon navigates the duke's deadly games, she is watched by two silent figures: Kaltain, a broken courtier who now wields a terrifying shadowfire, and a crippled servant girl named Elide, who carries a secret lineage of her own.

To free her cousin, Aelin must play Arobynn's game, stepping back into the role of his prized protégée. She finds an unexpected and wary ally in the courtesan Lysandra, her childhood rival, whose own past is woven with Arobynn's cruelty. Together, they begin to dismantle his empire from the inside out, even as Aelin forges a fragile truce with Chaol Westfall. The former Captain of the Guard, now a leader of the rebellion, is broken by guilt and desperate to save Dorian. He distrusts the queen and her fire, seeing her as a monster, yet their paths are irrevocably tangled. In the fighting pits and on the blood-soaked execution squares, they clash and conspire, their shared past a chasm between them as they fight for the soul of the city.

The rescue of Aedion is a storm of smoke and shattered glass in the heart of the royal ball. Aelin, disguised as a dancer, becomes a whirlwind of death, cutting a path to her cousin's execution block. Reunited at last, they fight their way out of the castle and into the gardens, only to be confronted by the demon wearing Dorian's skin. Aelin raises her father's sword, prepared to grant her friend the mercy of death, but she hesitates. The choice is stolen from her when an arrow flies, an intervention from Chaol's new Captain of the Guard, Nesryn Faliq, forcing Aelin to flee with Aedion and leave a smirking Valg prince in her wake.

In Morath, Manon's world unravels when Elide returns from a spying mission with a horrifying truth: the Yellowlegs witches are not just being implanted with Valg offspring, but are being used as broodmares, forced to birth litters of monstrous creatures until their bodies break. The revelation shatters the fragile peace among the Thirteen, leading to a brutal confrontation with Asterin, her Second, who reveals a century-old secret of her own suffering at the hands of their grandmother. The cruelty of the Matron, the depravity of the duke - it is a line Manon can no longer ignore. When she learns Vernon Lochan, Elide's uncle, plans to deliver the girl to the breeding chambers, Manon leads her Thirteen in a bloody rescue, choosing her witches over her orders for the first time.

On the summer solstice, all paths converge on the glass castle. Aelin, cloaked once more as Celaena Sardothien, walks through the front gates with Chaol in chains, a prize for the king. She has come for vengeance, and to buy time for her court. Deep in the sewers below, Rowan Whitethorn and Aedion Ashryver carry urns of hellfire toward the base of the clock tower that stifles magic. But in the throne room, the king reveals he has known her identity all along, and to force her hand, he tortures Dorian with raw, dark power. Just as Aelin prepares to fight, the clock tower explodes, and a soft, beautiful wind rushes across the land as magic is unbound.

Freed from its shackles, power floods through Aelin, but it is Dorian who truly breaks. His grief and rage at Chaol's apparent death at his father's hand are enough to shatter the Valg's hold and snap the Wyrdstone collar from his neck. As the king attacks, Aelin and Dorian join hands, their magic - fire and ice - becoming one devastating force that obliterates the king's darkness. Defeated, the king makes a final, shocking confession: he, too, was possessed by a demon, his every atrocity an act to protect his son from the Valg king, Erawan, who he himself accidentally released. But Dorian offers no mercy. With a roar of pure agony, he unleashes his raw magic, and the glass castle shatters, raining down upon the city.

As a tidal wave of lethal glass surges toward Rifthold, Aelin raises a wall of wildfire to shield it, her power a blazing shield against destruction. She collapses, only to be saved by Rowan's wind. In the aftermath, she stands on a butchering block before the stunned populace and claims the city in the name of their new king. The King of Adarlan is dead. His empire is over. In the quiet that follows, Aelin tends to her wounded court: Rowan, injured saving her from the witches at Oakwald; Chaol, left paralyzed by the king's dark magic; and Dorian, free but hollowed by his ordeal.

Having saved Elide, Manon Blackbeak now owes a life debt to her enemy, the queen who pulled her from the rubble of a collapsing temple. The message she scrawled in Valg blood on a city wall - *The human is still inside him* - is her payment. Now, she flies back to a ruined Morath, her path uncertain, but her loyalty to her grandmother and the old ways irrevocably broken. A new world is dawning, and Manon is no longer a blade to be wielded by another, but a queen forging her own destiny.

The battle for Rifthold is won, but the war for their world has just begun. With Arobynn Hamel dead at Lysandra's hand and his fortune now hers, Aelin has the funds to raise an army. As Chaol and Nesryn prepare to sail to the Southern Continent in search of a cure, and Dorian steps into his role as king, Aelin turns her eyes northward. With her carranam, her cousin, and her court at her side, she rides for Terrasen. She is Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, and at long last, she is going home.
