Road to Oz

Reviewers note that "The Road to Oz" offers a whimsical and enjoyable adventure, particularly for younger readers and dedicated fans of the series. The book introduces several new characters, with Polychrome, the daughter of the Rainbow, often highlighted as an appealing and charming addition, and the Shaggy Man providing humorous interactions for some. Readers also appreciated the return of many beloved characters from previous Oz books, and L. Frank Baum's continued ability to create memorable figures, even in brief appearances. The narrative is praised for expanding the imaginative world of Oz, featuring delightful and witty banter between characters, and offering a sense of adventure and discovery. Ozma's birthday party, serving as a central event, is described as a grand and picturesque gathering that provides a fun excuse for many characters to come together. Some found the initial interactions between new characters genuinely funny, and the book is generally considered a quick and light read, suitable as a break from more demanding literature.

Despite its positive aspects, many adult readers found this installment to be one of the weaker Oz books, often feeling repetitive and formulaic. A significant criticism is the perceived lack of a substantial plot, conflict, or dramatic arc, with the story often described as a series of disconnected, bizarre encounters leading to a predictable resolution. Dorothy's character draws criticism for appearing annoying, lacking common sense, frequently calling others "stupid," and being overly complacent about getting lost, diminishing her role as a strong protagonist. The new characters also received mixed reviews; while some found them interesting, others considered Button-Bright annoying and pointless, and the Shaggy Man's initial introduction and his "love magnet" were deemed unsettling or "creepy" by modern standards. Reviewers also noted inconsistencies in the magical rules of Oz, such as why Toto remains unable to speak. The lengthy descriptions of characters arriving at Ozma's party were cited as tedious and indicative of lazy writing, with some feeling Baum was bored or pressured into writing the book, leading to a lack of heart in the storytelling and even perceived "brazen cross-promotion" of his other works. The appearance of Santa Claus was also seen as out of place by some.

In conclusion, "The Road to Oz" is generally regarded as a less compelling entry in the Oz series, particularly for adult readers who may find its narrative thin and repetitive. However, its whimsical nature, simple adventures, and the reunion of many familiar characters still make it an enjoyable read for children and dedicated fans of the Oz universe. It would appeal to readers seeking a light, undemanding fantasy story who are already familiar with the previous books and are eager to see the extensive cast of Oz characters gather for a celebration, rather than those looking for a strong plot or deep character development. While it may not stand out as one of Baum's best, it continues the tradition of expanding the magical world for its intended young audience.
