R.S. Thomas

This book offers valuable insights for readers interested in its subject, particularly through its close textual analysis. The reviewer appreciated how the book delved into the subject's use of form, identifying it as a key strength. Furthermore, the book successfully conveyed new information regarding the subject's life and ideas, providing educational value despite its shortcomings.

However, the book received significant criticism for its structure and approach. It was described as overly detailed and lacking a clear, unifying theme, resembling an extended academic thesis without a defined research question. Some analytical interpretations were considered speculative, extending beyond what the text explicitly supported. Certain sections, such as comparisons to other literary figures or discussions of art inspired by the subject, felt tangential and, despite their length, lacked sufficient depth. The reviewer also expressed discomfort with what was perceived as an unpleasantly critical and combative tone directed at other authors.

In conclusion, while the book provides useful textual analysis and factual information about its subject, its sprawling structure, speculative arguments, and confrontational tone may not appeal to all readers. This work would likely be best suited for academics or deeply dedicated enthusiasts of the subject who are prepared to engage with a highly detailed, academically styled exploration that occasionally diverges into tangential discussions.
