This book is widely praised for its unique and compelling narrative, told entirely from the perspective of a young child. Readers found this viewpoint effectively captures a child's wonder, creativity, and innocence, making the grim realities of their confined situation even more poignant and haunting. The author's ability to create strong, memorable characters and explore the profound psychological impact of trauma and abuse is frequently highlighted. Many reviewers commend the book for its emotional depth, its exploration of human resilience, and the powerful bond of motherhood, finding it both touching and life-affirming. The plot is described as engaging, with a dramatic shift in pace that keeps readers invested, and the narrative is appreciated for delving into the long-term aftermath of the events, offering a more complete and insightful story.

Despite its strengths, some readers found aspects of the book challenging. The child narrator, while central to its unique appeal, was occasionally described as annoying by some, and the simplicity of language and grammatical inaccuracies inherent in a child's perspective could be trying for others. The narrative's restriction to the child's point of view also meant limited access to the mother's thoughts, which some found frustrating. Given its subject matter, the book deals with intensely heavy and potentially triggering topics, making it unsuitable for sensitive readers. While many appreciated the extended narrative, some felt the pace slowed down in certain places, or that the post-climax segments became monotonous or a letdown compared to the earlier intensity, focusing on less dramatic elements like media scrutiny. A few also noted discomfort with detailed descriptions of bodily functions.

Overall, this book offers a deeply emotional and thought-provoking reading experience that stays with readers long after completion. It is highly recommended for those who appreciate a unique narrative voice and are prepared for a psychologically intense exploration of trauma, survival, and the enduring strength of the human spirit, particularly the bond between a mother and her child. Readers who are not deterred by challenging subject matter and who enjoy narratives that delve into the complexities of human experience from an unconventional perspective will likely find this book rewarding. However, those sensitive to triggering content or who prefer a more conventionally paced or adult-oriented narration might find it less suitable.
