Reviewers widely praise "The Gathering" for its engaging and fast-paced storytelling, marking it as a refreshing entry in the young adult paranormal genre that avoids many common clichés. The novel's unique setting, an isolated medical research town nestled within a Canadian national park, is a strong highlight, contributing an atmospheric and vivid backdrop to the story. Readers appreciate the innovative use of Native Canadian mythology, which introduces a fresh take on supernatural beings. The characters are another significant strength; the protagonist, Maya, is lauded as a strong, confident, and likable young woman. Her relationships, particularly with her supportive adoptive parents, are noted for their realism and warmth, offering a welcome change from typical YA dynamics. The romantic interest is also commended for being well-balanced and free from the usual "broody control-freak" stereotype.

Despite its strengths, the book frequently draws criticism for its slow pacing and limited plot development, with many reviewers feeling that a significant portion of the novel serves primarily as setup rather than a self-contained story. This leads to an often-cited flaw: an abrupt and anti-climactic ending that leaves numerous questions unanswered and lacks a satisfying resolution or strong cliffhanger. Some readers found the plot predictable, especially those familiar with the author's previous works or common genre tropes. There are also mentions of repetitive descriptions of the town's isolation and, in a few instances, concerns about the portrayal of certain mythological elements or the sophistication of the writing for a YA novel.

Ultimately, "The Gathering" is considered an enjoyable read by many, with Kelley Armstrong's compelling writing style often overcoming its structural shortcomings. While it may feel like an extended introduction, the book successfully builds intrigue and leaves many readers eager to continue the series. This novel is particularly recommended for fans of young adult paranormal fantasy seeking a character-driven story with a strong, relatable protagonist and a unique setting. It would also appeal to readers who appreciate realistic family relationships, a balanced approach to romance, and those patient enough to enjoy a slow-burn narrative that lays the groundwork for future installments.
