Searching for Sunday Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church

Many readers lauded the author's brilliant and authentic writing style, praising her ability to skillfully blend personal stories, humor, history, and encouragement. The book deeply resonated with those who have experienced disillusionment, hurt, or discomfort with the American Church, particularly within evangelical traditions. Reviewers frequently expressed a sense of validation and not being alone in their struggles, finding the narrative comforting and hopeful. The book's unique structure, organized around seven sacraments, was highlighted as a compelling framework that offers tangible avenues for encountering God and fostering community. It is celebrated for its profound insights into faith, doubt, and the intricate relationship individuals have with the Church, extending grace and inspiring hope.

Conversely, some reviewers voiced strong theological objections, asserting that the book's arguments deviate from biblical teachings and present an overly liberal interpretation of Christianity. They criticized what they perceived as an accommodation of modern social issues, such as the ordination of women and acceptance of homosexual relationships, at the expense of traditional scriptural authority. A few found the narrative to be more of a "narrated lecture" or "manifesto" than a personal memoir, with repetitive language or an unclear connection between chapters and their sacramental headings. Others felt the author's critiques of conservative viewpoints and traditional church stances were excessive, portraying them as "leftist politics" that overshadowed other messages. Additionally, some readers found the book vague in substance or felt that the author's personal journey was diluted by extensive prose and references to other writers, leading to a less engaging experience, with some questioning the book's sincerity in light of perceived external inconsistencies.

Ultimately, this book is highly recommended for individuals grappling with their faith, those who feel alienated from or are questioning the church, particularly within evangelical contexts. It offers solace and affirmation for anyone navigating the complexities of their spiritual journey and the institutional church. However, it may prove challenging or unhelpful for readers seeking a strictly traditional biblical theology or those who disagree with its progressive perspectives on faith and social issues. Despite varying theological alignments, the book is widely recognized for its compelling writing and honest engagement with difficult questions, serving as a meaningful read for those open to a broader understanding of faith and yearning for a church defined by love and grace.
