Second Jungle Book Illustrated

Reviewers largely praise The Second Jungle Book for its rich, vibrant, and thoughtful prose, highlighting Rudyard Kipling's masterful command of language and his ability to craft captivating narratives. Many find it an empathetic work, offering deep insights into the natural world, the "Law of the Jungle," and the complex relationships between animals and humans. The collection is celebrated for its philosophical depth, exploring themes of fear, law, life's full circle, and even spirituality. Readers appreciate the nuanced character development, particularly Mowgli's maturation, and the strong bonds depicted among the jungle inhabitants. The interspersed poems and songs are seen as enhancing the narrative, providing additional food for thought. Furthermore, the book is lauded for its diverse array of stories, which include thrilling action, humorous encounters, and poignant reflections, often set in evocatively described environments that extend beyond the familiar Indian jungle to icy northern landscapes. Many consider its quality to be on par with, or even superior to, the first Jungle Book, offering a more complex and noble portrayal of characters than popularized adaptations.

Despite its strengths, some reviewers note several drawbacks. A common criticism points to a perceived lack of consistent narrative structure, particularly within the Mowgli stories, with some finding the timeline disjointed or the pacing dry and verbose. The quality of the non-Mowgli stories is also seen as inconsistent, with certain tales described as bland, boring, or forgettable by some readers. Some find the book's tone to be more adult and less consistently entertaining than its predecessor, potentially making it less engaging for younger audiences. Additionally, certain character portrayals, including Mowgli's actions or a perceived lack of development, do not resonate with all readers. A few reviewers also mention archaic language and a potentially pro-colonial undertone as aspects that might deter modern sensibilities. Specific editions, such as some audio versions, have been noted for being incomplete.

Overall, The Second Jungle Book is widely regarded as a classic that offers a compelling continuation of Kipling's world, often deepening the themes and character arcs introduced in the first volume. It is recommended for readers of all ages, from nine to ninety, who appreciate classic literature, rich and evocative prose, and a profound exploration of nature, law, and human-animal dynamics. This collection particularly appeals to those interested in Mowgli's journey into adulthood and who are open to a series of interconnected short stories rather than a single, continuous novel. Readers who can set aside preconceived notions from popularized adaptations and embrace a more complex, philosophical, and sometimes challenging narrative will likely find it a rewarding and thought-provoking experience.
