Reviewers offer a mixed but predominantly critical assessment of this book, largely comparing it to its highly popular television adaptation. Those who appreciated the book often highlight its sharp, witty, and funny writing, which some found engaging enough to keep reading. Many commend its raw and authentic portrayal of dating and social life in 1990s New York, describing it as more real and compelling than the TV series. For fans of the show, the book provides a fascinating glimpse into the original source material, revealing the genesis of characters and plotlines that inspired the first season. It is also valued by some as a keen social satire, skillfully commenting on the high-society norms of Manhattan during a period of perceived decadence and excess, offering a detached yet insightful look into the complexities faced by women navigating evolving gender roles.

Conversely, a significant majority of reviews express deep disappointment, particularly when comparing the book to the HBO series, which many found vastly superior. Common criticisms include a perceived lack of charm, depth, and character development, with many finding the book's characters shallow, unlikeable, and self-indulgent. The narrative structure is frequently cited as jumbled and unfocused, making it difficult to follow specific individuals or plotlines and leading to disengagement. Reviewers also found certain content dated, uncomfortable, or even misogynistic, reflecting attitudes from the 90s that did not age well. The main character is often described as a messier, less sympathetic, and sometimes narcissistic figure compared to her television counterpart. Many readers found the book boring, lacking substance, and ultimately a "mess," with some unable to finish it due to a clinical, emotionless tone and a flat ending.

Overall, the book is widely seen as a distinctly different entity from the beloved television series it inspired, with many reviewers crediting the show's writers for their transformative vision. It is best suited for readers who can approach it as a standalone work of social satire rather than expecting a direct literary equivalent of the TV show. Fans curious about the origins of the series may find it an interesting, albeit often challenging, read, provided they are prepared for a grittier, more cynical, and less glamorous depiction of urban life and relationships. This book would appeal to those interested in a raw, almost sociological perspective on 1990s New York society and the complexities of human connection, particularly if they appreciate journalistic writing or collections of columns.
