Sen lin zhi ge Finding the mother tree : uncovering the wisdom and intelligence of the forest

The reviews frequently commend the book for its groundbreaking scientific content, particularly the author's pioneering discoveries about how trees communicate and share resources through vast underground fungal networks, often referred to as the "Wood Wide Web." Many readers found the scientific insights mind-blowing and transformative, offering a new perspective on the interconnectedness of nature and the vital role of "Mother Trees" in supporting forest ecosystems. Reviewers appreciated the author's passion, dedication, and "renegade doggedness" in pursuing knowledge, often against prevailing scientific and industrial views. For some, the blend of personal memoir with scientific explanation was compelling, creating an accessible and informative narrative that highlighted the author's profound love and respect for forests.

However, a significant number of reviewers expressed reservations about the book's structure and writing style. Many felt the balance between memoir and science was uneven, with some finding too much focus on the author's personal life and family history, which they deemed less interesting or relevant than the scientific subject matter. Conversely, some found the scientific explanations either too technical and detailed for a general audience, or too generalized without sufficient depth or visual aids to aid comprehension. Critics noted issues with the prose, describing it as disjointed, jumbled, or in need of more thorough editing, which sometimes led to a slow and challenging reading experience. There were also concerns that the author occasionally glossed over complex social and historical issues, and that some personal anecdotes raised questions for certain readers.

Despite these mixed opinions on its execution, most reviewers acknowledged the immense importance and value of the author's scientific work. The book is lauded for its vital message about ecological balance and cooperation in nature, offering hope and inspiration for understanding and protecting our planet. While some recommend it as a must-read for anyone interested in forest ecology, naturalists, and scientists, others suggest that it may not be the ideal starting point for a general audience new to the topic, recommending alternative resources like the author's public talks or other introductory books on forest interconnectedness. Ultimately, readers who appreciate a blend of scientific discovery with a personal journey, and who have patience for detailed procedural explanations or extensive biographical elements, are most likely to find this book a profound and rewarding experience.
