Sense of Style The Thinking Person's Guide to Writing in the 21st Century

Steven Pinker's book is widely praised for its engaging, intelligent, and often humorous approach to improving writing. Reviewers consistently highlight Pinker's unique perspective as a linguist and cognitive scientist, which allows him to explain the logic behind language rules and debunk outdated conventions with evidence-based reasoning. The book is lauded for its strong emphasis on clarity, coherence, and reader empathy, encouraging writers to put themselves in their audience's shoes and avoid the "curse of knowledge." Many found the practical advice, supported by numerous side-by-side examples, to be highly effective in refining their prose and gaining a deeper understanding of what makes good writing truly shine.

Despite its strengths, some readers found the book's structure and pacing inconsistent, occasionally feeling more like a scholarly monograph than a practical guide. Specific sections, particularly those delving into detailed linguistic explanations such as sentence tree diagrams, were sometimes described as overly technical, dense, or even tiresome, making them a "slog" to get through for certain readers. Experienced writers occasionally noted that some of the advice felt like "old news," offering limited new insights for those already proficient. Additionally, its narrative format, rather than a quick-reference style, made it less convenient for looking up specific grammar points, and a few reviewers felt Pinker's extensive vocabulary could sometimes border on pretentiousness, inadvertently contradicting his own advice on clarity.

Ultimately, "The Sense of Style" is considered a valuable resource for those genuinely interested in the craft of writing and the underlying principles of effective communication. It is particularly recommended for experienced writers, English majors, and anyone with a curious mind who enjoys delving into the "why" behind language conventions rather than just a list of dos and don'ts. While it may not serve as a straightforward grammar primer or a quick-reference manual for beginners, its nuanced, evidence-based approach and focus on cognitive psychology offer significant benefits for those seeking to elevate their non-fiction or academic writing with greater consistency, clarity, and grace.
