The reviews frequently praise this book as an excellent and even indispensable introduction to Martin Heidegger's complex philosophy, often suggested as a starting point for new readers or those who found his earlier works challenging. Many highlight it as a concise, self-written summary of his core ideas, offering a unique perspective from Heidegger himself on his intellectual journey and the evolution of his thought. Reviewers appreciate its ability to lay the groundwork for understanding key concepts from his magnum opus and subsequent works. The book is noted for its relative brevity, making it a more accessible entry point into his often-dense writings. It is considered vital for comprehending his later philosophical shifts, particularly his reinterpretation of earlier ideas and his engagement with topics like phenomenology, metaphysics, and technology. For those already familiar with Heidegger, the collection offers valuable insights into his transitional thinking and serves as a crucial resource for any serious study of his work.

Despite its perceived importance, many reviewers acknowledge the book's inherent difficulty, even for seasoned readers of philosophy. A recurring sentiment is that the text is profoundly challenging, with several readers admitting to understanding only a fraction of its content or feeling intellectually overwhelmed. The abstract nature of Heidegger's concepts, such as "Appropriation" or his "turn," can be particularly hard to grasp, often leaving readers feeling confused or requiring external assistance for interpretation. Some describe it as a "good bite for the intellect but a bit indigestible," necessitating multiple readings or a significant mental effort to penetrate its depth. While valuable, the book is not a light read and can induce a sense of intellectual struggle, with some components, like the seminar summaries, occasionally deemed less essential compared to other available works.

Overall, this collection of essays is regarded as a pivotal and highly recommended work for anyone engaging with Martin Heidegger's philosophy. It serves as a critical bridge between his earlier and later thought, offering a unique glimpse into his self-interpretation and the development of his ideas. While undeniably demanding, its conciseness and the directness of Heidegger's own exposition make it a valuable, if challenging, resource. This book is particularly suited for advanced students of philosophy, academics, and those already familiar with some of Heidegger's work who wish to deepen their understanding of his philosophical trajectory and later concepts. It is also suggested as a bold starting point for ambitious beginners, provided they are prepared for a rigorous intellectual endeavor that may require patience and multiple readings to fully appreciate its profound insights.
