We were immediately subjected to a brutal selection, a chilling division into two groups: those destined for immediate death in the gas chambers of Birkenau, and those, like myself, deemed fit for labor. Life in the Lager, as we called the camp, was a constant, gnawing battle against hunger, cold, and exhaustion. Every morning brought the same monotonous, back-breaking labor in the Buna work camp, striving to produce synthetic rubber for the German war effort. My slight stature made the heavy loads a torment, and sores on my feet never healed. We were perpetually on the brink of collapse, our bodies wasting away, our minds dulled by the ceaseless struggle for a meager ration of bread and watery soup. The camp system was designed to strip us of our humanity, to reduce us to mere cogs in a machine of destruction. Asking "why" was forbidden; there was no why.

Yet, amidst this landscape of despair, the instinct to survive flickered, sometimes fiercely, sometimes as a dim ember. I learned to navigate the complex, contradictory rules of the camp, to protect my few possessions, to barter for scraps of extra food. Luck, I realized, played an arbitrary and enormous role in who lived and who perished. A small kindness, a shared word, a moment of connection with another prisoner, could be a lifeline. I recall the precious moments when my mind, trained as a chemist, was briefly reawakened by the chance to take a chemistry exam for a possible lab position. It was a fleeting return to a world of logic and intellect, a stark contrast to the irrationality that surrounded us.

One such lifeline was Lorenzo, an Italian civilian worker who, for six months, smuggled me extra food. His simple, uncontaminated humanity, his willingness to help without expectation of reward, reminded me that I was still a man, that the world outside the barbed wire still held goodness.
