What other readers say
Liked
Eduardo Galeano's "Soccer in Sun and Shadow" is widely praised for its captivating and poetic prose, drawing readers into the world of football with an almost magical narrative. Reviewers highlight its unique ability to enthrall even those who are not avid football fans. The book offers a comprehensive historical journey through the sport, tracing its origins, major events, and iconic figures, particularly from Latin America. It masterfully interweaves the game's evolution with broader political and social contexts, enriching the understanding of its cultural significance. Many appreciate Galeano's focus on the human element, celebrating the joy, passion, and beauty of the game, and presenting a rich tapestry of memorable anecdotes and philosophical insights that transcend the sport itself.
Disliked
Despite its many merits, some readers note specific limitations. A recurring point of criticism is that the book's narrative concludes with the 1994 World Cup, rendering some historical details less relevant for younger generations or those seeking more contemporary coverage. For highly knowledgeable football enthusiasts, certain historical facts or common knowledge about the sport might feel redundant. The book's episodic structure, while charming to many, can sometimes feel disjointed, and its descriptive passages of matches and goals may be less impactful in an age dominated by visual media. Additionally, Galeano's strong romanticized view of "old" football and his passionate critique of modern commercialization, corruption, and the loss of the game's "soul" can be perceived by some as overly partisan or a "rant," occasionally leading to questions about historical accuracy or biased portrayals of certain figures.
In short
Ultimately, "Soccer in Sun and Shadow" is considered a compelling and erudite classic of football literature, offering a unique blend of sports history, cultural commentary, and profound human stories. It is highly recommended for football enthusiasts who appreciate the sport's rich past, its cultural impact, and the human drama it embodies. Readers who enjoy philosophical, poetic, or politically engaged writing will also find much to savor. Moreover, due to its captivating storytelling and exploration of universal themes of passion, joy, and sorrow, the book is suggested even for those with only a passing interest in football, promising an enriching experience that celebrates the beautiful game in all its sun and shadow.
