Steep Trails

Reviewers largely praise this book for its captivating characters, particularly Fern, who is consistently described as unforgettable, intelligent, and endearing due to her unique way of experiencing the world. Her journey and interactions provide both heartwarming moments and unexpected humor. The complex bond between Fern and her sister, Rose, is central to the narrative, offering a deep exploration of sibling relationships. Many readers also enjoyed an unexpected and tender romantic storyline that develops within the book. The writing is frequently commended for its engaging quality, keeping readers engrossed from beginning to end, and the library setting where Fern works adds a charming backdrop.

Despite strong character development, a common point of critique centers on the book's predictability, especially regarding its suspenseful elements. Many experienced thriller readers found the main twists or the direction of the plot easy to anticipate, sometimes early in the story. This led some to feel that the book, while enjoyable, leaned more towards domestic drama or family fiction rather than a true psychological thriller, potentially misaligning with genre expectations. A few reviewers also noted that the pacing could slow down after the initial setup, and some found the resolution to be a bit abrupt or overly neat.

Overall, the book is considered a compelling and engaging read, with its richly drawn characters being its greatest strength, often elevating the story above any perceived flaws. It is highly recommended for readers who appreciate character-driven narratives, intricate family dynamics, and domestic dramas with elements of light suspense. Fans of women's fiction and stories featuring unique and memorable protagonists would likely find this book particularly enjoyable. However, those seeking a high-stakes, unpredictable psychological thriller with shocking, unforeseen twists might find it less surprising than anticipated.
