Taming of the Shrew Illustrated

A drunken tinker named Christopher Sly, found senseless outside an alehouse, is made the subject of a lord's elaborate prank. He is carried to the lord's mansion, dressed in finery, and convinced upon waking that he is a nobleman who has suffered from a long madness, his true identity merely a delusion. To entertain this bewildered lord, a company of players is brought in to perform a play.

The play begins in Padua, a city bustling with scholars and merchants. Young Lucentio arrives, eager to pursue his studies, but his attention is immediately captured by the lovely Bianca, daughter of the wealthy Baptista. Bianca, gentle and fair, has many suitors, but her father decrees that she cannot marry until her older sister, Katherina, the notoriously sharp-tongued "shrew," is wed.

Katherina is indeed a formidable woman, quick with a biting retort and a fiery temper, a stark contrast to her soft-spoken sister. Her reputation precedes her, and no man in Padua dares to court her. Meanwhile, Lucentio, desperate to be near Bianca, devises a clever plan: he disguises himself as a schoolmaster to gain entry into Baptista's household, while his servant Tranio takes on Lucentio's identity to openly court Bianca.

Into this intricate dance arrives Petruchio, a boisterous gentleman from Verona, openly declaring his intention to marry a rich woman, regardless of her temperament, simply for her dowry. Upon hearing of Katherina and her substantial inheritance, he boldly announces his intention to "woo" her. Their first meeting is a clash of wills and wits, a furious verbal sparring match where Katherina's sharp insults are met with Petruchio's unwavering confidence and outrageous declarations of love. He insists he will marry her, despite her protests, and falsely tells Baptista that she has consented.

The wedding day arrives, marked by Petruchio's shocking tardiness and his appearance in a most outlandish costume. The ceremony itself is a chaotic affair, with Petruchio behaving so boisterously that he causes a scandal. Immediately after, much to Katherina's dismay and Baptista's consternation, Petruchio declares they must leave for his country estate at once, denying her the traditional wedding feast.

At Petruchio's home, Katherina's "taming" truly begins. He denies her food, claiming it is not good enough, refuses her sleep, citing the poor quality of the bed, and even criticizes the tailor and haberdasher who bring her new clothes, all under the guise of concern for her well-being. He presents his tyrannical behavior as acts of love, mirroring her own perceived willfulness back at her. Worn down by his relentless and eccentric methods, Katherina gradually begins to yield to his whims, agreeing to his most absurd pronouncements, such as calling the sun the moon or an old man a young maiden.

Back in Padua, the subplot involving Bianca's suitors unfolds. Lucentio, in his disguise as a tutor, successfully wins Bianca's affections, and they secretly marry. Tranio, still impersonating Lucentio, manages to secure Baptista's blessing for Bianca's marriage by finding a merchant to pretend to be Lucentio's wealthy father. However, the true Vincentio, Lucentio's real father, eventually arrives, leading to a comical unraveling of the deception.

Finally, Petruchio and Katherina return to Padua for a wedding feast, where Lucentio and Bianca's secret marriage is revealed and ultimately accepted. Amidst the celebration, a wager is proposed among Petruchio, Lucentio, and Hortensio (another suitor who married a wealthy widow) to see whose wife is the most obedient. When called, Bianca and the Widow refuse to come, but Katherina appears immediately. She then delivers a lengthy speech on the duties of a wife, advocating for obedience and submission to her husband, much to the astonishment and admiration of all present. Petruchio, having won his wager and seemingly achieved his goal, departs with his "tamed" Katherina.
